Upper Manhattan's Washington Heights neighborhood has been gentrifying long enough now that news of new boutique hotel construction is unsurprising yet somewhat curious. We love Washington Heights but do question how many NYC visitors are going to choose to stay a hotel that far from the action. Well, in fact, the Heights is going to be getting not one, but two brand new hotels at the end of this year/early next year, and both are going to be largely aimed at accommodating the staff, patients, and visitors of the hospitals in the area.

The 52-room Audubon Hotel on West 181st Street and Audubon Avenue is nearing completion and, as well as offering reasonable hotels rates of $99 to $199, will also rent space to medical offices. Offering low room rates will be its best chance of attracting tourists as, when we visited the site, we found little in the way of attractions, besides many bodegas and a few cheap fashion stores.The second property, a 54-room hotel on West 168th and Audubon, (a short walk from New York Presbyterian Hospital and Columbia University Medical Center) broke ground on July 30th and is expected to open sometime in 2014. The hotel does not yet have a name, but Crain's New York Business reports that it is likely to be a brand such as a Hampton Inn or Holiday Inn.
