Choosing where to stay in London is becoming increasingly difficult, but for good reasons. With a number of high-profile properties having opened in 2013, from Me London to the Great Northern Hotel, and more major launches to come, including the London Edition next month, Rosewood London in October and Shangri-La London in The Shard shortly after, visitors to the capital are spoilt for choice. In the face of all this competition, the capital’s more established hotels may not be able to claim they can offer a comparatively fresh product, but a handful are responding by launching new suites. Hyatt Regency London – The Churchill has unveiled its Saatchi Suite, which features such curiosities as walls made of soap and furniture that guests can take home; the Royal Suite at the InterContinental London Park Lane references the hotel’s regal background – it stands on the site of the Queen’s childhood home; at the Berkeley, a 260sq metre suite designed by Andre Fu is due to open in October. The Café Royal hotel, meanwhile, has also just announced the launch of six suites within the property. Opened in late 2012, the hotel is still introducing new products – its spa has yet to open – and the new suites will be the most luxurious accommodation options available at the property thus far.

The largest is the Empire Suite, which at 200sq metres has ample space for a living room with dining space, walk-in wardrobe, study and large bathroom finished with Carrara marble. The circular Dome Suite is described by the hotel as “the ultimate rock ‘n’ roll suite’ and includes its own DJ booth; more restrained, the Club Suite is inspired by the hotel’s French heritage and includes moulds of the changing faces of Napoleon.
The choices for guests continue, with the Tudor Suite inspired by the Elizabethan era and including an original Tudor fireplace and Jacobean symbols on the walls of the living area. The more modern Marquis Suite will impress visitors with its quintessential London views – it looks at the screens of Piccadilly Circus and directly over Big Ben – while the Celestine Suite is demurely decorated in soft yellows and includes ample dining space for guests who may wish to entertain. All of the suites are now available to book, with prices starting from £4,000 per night.

Some say the best hotels make you never want to leave, and this rings true when it comes to The St. Regis Deer Valley. From the scenic mountain location to elegant décor and guest-minded personal service, the Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star hotel serves as a premier destination year-round. With 177 guest rooms and 26 private residences, the Park City hotel is big in size but boutique in its feel. Should you need assistance during your stay at the luxury hotel, the famous St. Regis butlers are on-hand to take care of your every need 24 hours a day—from unpacking your suitcase to delivering coffee and tea to your room. Grabbing a meal at J&G Grill is a must during your stay, where floor-to-ceiling windows afford views of the slopes and the menu features enticing options such as black truffle pizza with fontina cheese or Alaskan halibut with a miso-yuzu glaze and roasted maitake mushrooms.

Considering The St. Regis Deer Valley is located within a private residential community, the most popular way to access the Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star hotel is by the funicular. Built when the hotel was constructed in 2009, the two-cab funicular transports guests from the base at Deer Valley Resort—230 vertical feet—up to The St. Regis, all in a matter of 90 seconds. The cabs were designed by the Swiss company Gangloff, which created the first funicular in 1929 and served as the carriage maker to European royalty. Hop in one of the cabs and make your way up to the hotel, which is situated on 12 slope-side acres overlooking the Wasatch and Uinta mountains. The St. Regis Deer Valley’s lower level houses the hotel’s ski valet, conveniently located right next to the mountain’s Deer Hollow run. Valets will warm your boots and handle your equipment before you head out on the slopes.

Locals admit that summertime is Park City’s best-kept secret, and a stay at The St. Regis Deer Valley is no exception. Rates for the Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star hotel go down during the warmer months, making summer a great time for a family trip. The area is home to a massive bike trail system, which is the first and only Gold-Level Ride Center in the world awarded by the International Mountain Biking Association. Deer Valley Resort affords countless hiking trails, and a summer concert series at the Snow Park Outdoor Amphitheater—at the base of the funicular—is a great way to spend an evening in Park City. Of course, we’d be remiss not to advocate for a trip to The St. Regis Deer Valley during ski season, when countless snow bunnies descend upon the Utah destination to explore the mountain. The luxury hotel’s outdoor fire pits along with its cozy library stocked with books and board games are the perfect way to unwind after an active day.

From the grand lobby with its stunning stone columns and large windows to the 14,000-square-foot Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star Remède Spa Deer Valley, the hotel stands as the epitome of an elegant mountain retreat. Unique touches around the property convey a true sense of thoughtfulness: The St. Regis Wine Vault holds upward of 12,000 bottles, including some magnums that belong to the owners of the private residences, and The St. Regis Bar’s signature twist on a Bloody Mary, the 7452 Mary, gives a nod to the local community with black sea salt representing Park City’s mining history, High West Distillery vodka and “7452” signifying the altitude of the hotel.

Luxury Hotels In San Diego

The state has reversed its previous decision to confiscate the Cliff Hotel in East Jerusalem from its owners, the State Prosecutor's Office informed the Supreme Court on Wednesday. The state had invoked the Absentee Property Law to seize the property, located some 50 meters from the Palestinian Parliament in Abu Dis. An expanded panel of seven justices headed by Supreme Court President Asher Grunis has been hearing the case, which centers on applying the Absentees Property Law – 1950 to confiscate property in East Jerusalem. Under that law, any person who lived in a hostile country, or in the area of “the Land of Israel” that was not under the State of Israel’s control, and owned property within the state, is considered an absentee owner and his property can be transferred to the Custodian of Absentee Property.

The primary purpose of this law was to enable use of lands belonging to Arabs who fled during the War of Independence. After the Six-Day War, which saw the extention of Jerusalem's municipal boundaries into the West Bank, Palestinians with assets in Jerusalem suddenly found themselves considered “absentee” owners, even though they hadn’t gone anywhere. For example, the Ayad family of Abu Dis owned the Cliff Hotel, only 200 meters from their home. However, the municipal boundary of Jerusalem now runs right between their home and the hotel. As a result, in 2003 the Custodian declared it absentee property and confiscated the hotel for the state. The hotel now stands deserted, and the state had wanted to turn it into a base for Israel's Border Police following the completion of the separation fence in the area.

The Ayad family, along with a number of other Palestinian families whose property was confiscated, took their legal battle all the way to the Supreme Court. In a response filed this morning by Moshe Golan of the State Prosecutor's Office, Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein has reversed his previous opinion and said there are significant legal difficulties to implementing the Absentees Property Law in East Jerusalem, both in the area of international and administrative law. Nonetheless, Weinstein said it would be appropriate to implement the law in East Jerusalem in a measured fashion. The State Prosecutor's Office said the Custodian for Absentee Property should not use the authority granted to him under the law for such property "except under special circumstances and subject to the prior approval of the Attorney General." The state also announced it was withdrawing its appeal of a District Court ruling returning one of the properties to its Palestinian owners. The prosecution said it had been convinced that it would not be able to prove the factual basis that the owners met the conditions of "absentees" under the law.

The state also presented the court with the decisions in three other cases of the special committee that operates based on the Absentee Property Law to examine the possibility of releasing the properties from the hands of the custodian and returning them to their original owners. The committee is headed by Ehud Prawer, the Prime Minister’s Office official who heads the committee that formulated the plan to regulate Bedouin lands in the Negev. As to the Cliff Hotel, the committee recommended that the Custodian of Absentee Property release the part of the property that had not yet been confiscated and pay for the part that had been confiscated. But the property will be released only to those heirs who are residents of the West Bank. The owners are the dozen heirs of Abdel Hadi Ayad, who died in 1978, and include a British citizen, a Norwegian citizen, four Jordanians, three residents of the Palestinian Authority and three citizens of Kuwait.

As to another property in the area of Beit Hanina, the committee decided the Custodian must pay the Palestinian heirs, the Hatib family, the value of the property, which has already been sold. One of the heirs was a terrorist who participated in the hijacking of the Air France plane to Entebbe in 1976 and was killed by IDF soldiers during the operation to free the hostages. As to his heirs, the committee decided they were not entitled to compensation. The committee did not make a decision in the third case, saying it lacked the detailed information required. A few months ago Weinstein's office formulated regulations to ensure that properties seized in East Jerusalem under the Absentees Property Law would not be returned to Palestinians with a security record or connection to hostile elements. Moreover, such properties would only be returned to Palestinian owners after taking into account “the influence releasing the property would have given its location in the fabric of Jerusalem’s neighborhoods,” the proposed guidelines state. This would make it difficult for a Palestinian to get back his property if Jews had moved into the adjacent areas. Avigdor Feldman, the lawyer representing the Hatib family and the owners of the Cliff Hotel, objected to the State Prosecutor's Office's announcement to the Supreme Court. Feldman called the announcement an attempt to avoid a discussion of the principle of the issue.

Upper Manhattan's Washington Heights neighborhood has been gentrifying long enough now that news of new boutique hotel construction is unsurprising yet somewhat curious. We love Washington Heights but do question how many NYC visitors are going to choose to stay a hotel that far from the action. Well, in fact, the Heights is going to be getting not one, but two brand new hotels at the end of this year/early next year, and both are going to be largely aimed at accommodating the staff, patients, and visitors of the hospitals in the area.

The 52-room Audubon Hotel on West 181st Street and Audubon Avenue is nearing completion and, as well as offering reasonable hotels rates of $99 to $199, will also rent space to medical offices. Offering low room rates will be its best chance of attracting tourists as, when we visited the site, we found little in the way of attractions, besides many bodegas and a few cheap fashion stores. The second property, a 54-room hotel on West 168th and Audubon, (a short walk from New York Presbyterian Hospital and Columbia University Medical Center) broke ground on July 30th and is expected to open sometime in 2014. The hotel does not yet have a name, but Crain's New York Business reports that it is likely to be a brand such as a Hampton Inn or Holiday Inn.

IN LINE with a growing trend towards sustainable building practices in South Africa, hoteliers are also adopting "greening" initiatives, with the latest addition to the industry, Hotel Verde, claiming to be "Africa’s greenest hotel". The three-star hotel, which officially opened on Tuesday and is 400m from Cape Town International Airport, is part of the BON Hotels Group. André Harms, Hotel Verde’s sustainability consultant, said the 145-room hotel used various methods of "dematerialisation". It was built with concrete slabs containing recycled materials, using Cobaix Void Formers.

Mr Harms said the strategic placing of these recycled polypropylene, hollow spheres had saved about 1,279 tonnes of concrete. According to BON Hotels, to bypass the need for standard air-conditioning systems — traditionally one of the biggest energy consumers — Hotel Verde uses geothermal heat pumps coupled to 100 boreholes which are drilled 65m into the ground. At this depth, the temperature is a consistent 19°C. AGO Energy installed a network of pumps and piping specifically designed for Hotel Verde that uses the earth as a heat source in winter and "heat sink" in summer, "boosting efficiency and dramatically reducing operational costs". Hotel Verde also has photovoltaic panels, wind turbines and a grey-water recycling plant that is expected to reduce the hotel’s water consumption by 37%.

Meanwhile, listed hotel and gaming group Tsogo Sun last week became the latest company in the hospitality industry to pledge its support for the 49M energy-efficiency campaign. Tsogo Sun chief marketing officer Rob Collins said last week the 49M pledge involved a commitment to a 10% reduction in energy usage. Mr Collins said the group, which has more than 90 hotels and 14 casinos, continually revisits its environmental strategy across all its properties. Tsogo Sun has been working to reduce energy consumption with Eskom since May 2006. Cape Town’s Radisson Blu Waterfront hotel, which is part of the global Rezidor Hotel Group, was earlier this year announced as the group’s winning hotel in the Think Planet campaign.

With more than 430 hotels in 70 countries, the group is among the fastest-growing hotel companies in the world. The Rezidor group, under its Think Planet initiative, has set itself the goal of reducing its total energy consumption by 25% across its entire portfolio by 2016. Radisson Blu Waterfront hotel GM Michael Rathgeb said earlier in 2013 that the hotel’s staff had "completely obliterated the 5% target set for year one, and in doing so, set a challenge to the other (group) hotels by achieving the highest overall reduction in energy…" This energy saving was equivalent to 20,000 LED (light-emitting diode) bulbs lit for one year, he said.

A Tennessee developer plans to build a 257-room hotel in the Crossroads Arts District that will be the first significant new hotel project in downtown Kansas City since the Vista International opened in 1985. Chartwell Hospitality plans to break ground early next year on a 10-story hotel building that will house two flags, a Marriott Courtyard and Residence Inn. The project includes a 166-space garage, and in an intriguing shift, the developer will not be seeking city tax incentives for the project. “We think the downtown market is ripe for a new hotel,” Will Schaedle, Chartwell acquisitions and development manager, said Monday. “We’re happy to be the developer. “We think … (it) is a good spot with the Power & Light District nearby and development pushing south, and it’s within walking distance to the central business district.”

While several hotels have opened in downtown since 2000, including the Hilton President Hotel, the Phillips Hotel, Aladdin Hotel and the Ambassador Hotel, all have been renovation projects of existing buildings. The Chartwell hotel project is planned for the block between Main Street and Baltimore Avenue from 16th Street to Truman Road. It will be next to the new Sporting Innovation offices in the redeveloped Hanna Rubber Co. building at 1511 Baltimore. It does not include the old Lane Blueprint building at 1520 Main. The project also is one block from the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts and on the new streetcar route planned for Main Street.

The cost of the project was not disclosed, but Schaedle said it will be entirely privately financed. Chartwell is based in suburban Nashville and owns about 30 hotels across the country. Most, if not all, downtown and urban core projects in Kansas City in recent years have sought some type of incentives, either property tax abatement, tax-increment financing or both. Schaedle said having two hotel flags share a building is a relatively new concept. The Residence Inn, which is more of a longer-stay brand, will use 104 rooms, the Courtyard Marriott, geared to short visits, will occupy 153. Guests at both will use the same swimming pool, conference center and fitness room. The 190,000 square-foot hotel is expected to be completed by the fall of 2015. The property being sold is owned by the Weiner family. Whitney Kerr Sr. and Mike Posten of Cassidy Turley were the brokers representing the property owners.

Courtyard Hotels In San Diego

Four years ago, Ireland's debt-laden hotels were contending with falling visitor numbers and new competitors financed by surging mortgage lending during the Celtic Tiger. That's when zombie hotels emerged, slashing room rates to stay alive and keep tax breaks granted during the boom. Now increasing demand for rooms, led by Dublin, is prompting investors from American billionaire John Malone to Russia's richest woman to buy hotels here. The capital generated more revenue growth per available hotel room than any other major European city in the 12 months through June, according to a survey by lodging-data provider STR Global.

"There's a fair bit of capital in the marketplace looking for what people now believe is a good investment again," said Kevin McGillycuddy, managing director of Brehon Capital Partners. The Dublin-based private-equity firm and partner Midwest Holdings bought the Ritz-Carlton Powerscourt in Wicklow in February and opened the five-star Marker Hotel in April.

Tourism, Ireland's largest indigenous industry, was devastated by the global financial crisis, with visitor numbers plunging 23pc between 2008 and 2010. Demand for hotels evaporated, causing the occupancy rate to fall to a 16-year low of 59pc in 2009, according to a survey by Crowe Horwath, an accountancy and consultancy firm. Since then, visitor numbers have begun to pick up. The occupancy rate climbed to 64pc in 2012 from 61pc a year earlier, Crowe Horwath said. That's reflected in the property market. Hotel values have climbed about a fifth in downtown Dublin since September 2011, more than any other part of the Irish property market, brokers CBRE and Savills estimate. "Trade is very strong," said Peter MacCann, general manager of the five-star Merrion Hotel, opposite Government Buildings on Merrion Street. "We have to be careful – and this goes for every hotel – that we don't get greedy. We have got to protect the business to get it to come back."

"The real voyage of discovery consists not of seeking new landscapes, but of having new eyes." Words full of insight. But it is doubtful that the author of À la Recherche du Temps Perdu (Remembrance of Things Past) imagined that his oft-cited quote would be used to brand "literary-themed" hotels 100 years after the first publication of his defining work. The rise of the belles-lettres establishment, celebrating France's literary culture, and even that of its neighbours, is the latest marketing sensation in the French capital, as hoteliers come up with ever more innovative – or desperate – ways to attract guests. Sandwiched between a fast-food restaurant and a kebab house opposite the Gare de l'Est, the Le Marcel hotel has ideas well above its station. Born and raised in the chic 16th arrondissement, Proust would have spent little time in this, the gritty 10th, other than while passing through to catch a train.

But Le Marcel does not let the lack of linksto the great man spoil the promotional plot: "Marcel Proust's spirit hovers all around," says the hotel brochure. "The Marcel dresses up in indigo. This color (sic), a major element of romantic literature, is present everywhere in slight touches to recall that infinity is ubiquitous."
The rooms are named after some of Proust's most famous characters: the Saint Loup, after Robert de Saint-Loup, the boyhood friend of the narrator in À la Recherche du Temps Perdu; Guermantes, the duchess whose glamour seduces the young protagonist; and Swann – all characters that feature in the seven-volume work. There is, of course, a room named the Madeleine, after the cake that sparks the narrator's prolonged bout of recollection.

In the neighbouring 9th arrondissement, Les Plumes hotel pays tribute to literary lovers: George Sand and Alfred de Musset, Paul Verlaine and Arthur Rimbaud, Juliette Drouet and Victor Hugo. Set on the Rue Lamartine, named after the Romantic poet Alphonse de Lamartine, the hotel even has literary quotations etched on the shower glass. And in L'Hotel in the St Germain des Prés district, guests can sleep in the room in which Oscar Wilde died. One of the first literary-themed hotels was the Le Pavillon des Lettres, which opened in 2010, a stone's throw from the French president's residence at the Élysée Palace, where 26 rooms pay tribute to writers including William Shakespeare, Émile Zola and Franz Kafka. Whatever the conceit, it appears to work; Le Marcel is full, and Laurence Guilloux, director of the recently opened four-star R Kipling hotel, says its leather armchairs, fireplace and library are popular both with the "young and dynamic" and "older couples who like the ambience … it's about creating a character, a personality for each hotel".

It has been a good year for Paris hotels of all kinds, especially the high-end luxury establishments. Despite the economic recession and a slight drop in numbers on 2012 – a record year – the city's tourist authorities say 2013 is set to be "one of the tourist grands crus" for the capital. A fall in French guests has been compensated by an increase in British, American and, above all, Asian visitors. Georges Panayotis, founder and chairman of the marketing and tourism research company MKG Hospitality, said the luxury hotels had done particularly well, justifying the investment in renovations many had undergone. "Despite the difficult economic contest, the French hotel business has shown a remarkable resistance," he said. The emergence of author-themed hotels, he said, had shown the willingness of Paris hoteliers to raise their game in the face of international competition and demonstrated that the "investments are justified and profitable". "The idea of themes, of innovation, of specialising, not just in hotels but restaurants, is all part of this," he said. "We're going back to the basics of the quality of service and welcome à la français."Outside the Gare de l'Est, a group of young Britons was heading for the hotel they had chosen on the internet because it "looked clean and was good value". Would they choose a literary-themed hotel next time? "If it wasn't too expensive, why not?" said Josh, a business student from Southampton. "Sounds fun. Maybe for a romantic weekend rather than a trip with friends, though."

Tsogo Sun, with more than 90 hotels and 14 casinos, is the latest hotel group in South Africa to join Eskom’s 49M energy saving campaign. It signed up this week, pledging to reduce its electricity consumption by a further 10 percent. This is in addition to the measures it has been introducing in consultation with Eskom since May 2006. Other hotel groups that have joined the 49M campaign so far are City Lodge, which has 6 000 rooms in South Africa, and Three Cities. But the hotel industry as a whole has been cutting its costs and saving electricity for several years. It gains by making substantial savings and attracting environmentally concerned tourists from overseas in addition to helping South Africa’s economy and reducing the risk of energy blackouts. Danny Bryer, the sales, marketing and revenue director for Protea, said the group was saving more than R5 million a year by installing energy saving devices whenever one of its hotels was retrofitted. It made sense to do so in addition to helping the environment.

“In the past two years every hotel in the group undergoing renovation or refurbishment has been fitted with lighting or water heating energy saving devices that substantially reduces their overall electricity consumption. “It makes sense for hoteliers to look at installing energy efficient lighting and water heating systems. If you plan intelligently the capital expenditure doesn’t have to be vast and it’s also good to have a discussion with Eskom, which is offering rebates for certain conversions.” He said one Cape Town hotel, which had retrofitted new technology LED systems in all its public spaces, was saving nearly R20 000 a month on electricity bills.

“These energy-saving retrofits in the Protea hospitality group properties across South Africa aren’t part of a new approach – they are simply a component of our ongoing policy towards common sustainability that includes the environment and society. “Suitable planning simply has to be part of every responsible corporate entity’s strategic objectives.” Rob Collins, the chief marketing officer at Tsogo Sun, said the group continually revisited its environmental strategy to ensure that ongoing progress was made in protecting the environment. Employees and guests were encouraged to conserve resources for the benefit of the planet. Property-specific environmental systems aimed at energy, water, waste management and responsible procurement had been developed for all Tsogo Sun’s casinos and hotels. Employees were informed of the group’s policies and trained on their responsibilities. The privately owned Hotel Verde at Cape Town International Airport, which is managed by the recently formed Bon Hotels, is formally being opened today and has been purpose-built with every possible energy saving system, including geothermal heat pumps.

YTL Corp Bhd recorded a net profit of RM1.33bil for the financial year ended June 30, 2013 (FY13), 13% higher than the RM1.18bil in FY12, contributed mainly by the group’s property development, hotels and power station operation and maintainence. For FY13’s fourth quarter, the group achieved RM389.9mil in net profit, 19% higher than RM327.1mil last year. Revenue for the quarter came in at RM5.03bil, 1.2% lower than the RM5.09bil registered in the corresponding period a year ago. The utilities division, still the largest contributor within the group, saw improvements during the last quarter of the year despite a provision for impairment of other receivables in the power generation sector that impacted performance.

“However, better margins on electricity sales and tank leasing, lower operating expenses in the multi-utilities division and better pricing from our water and sewerage operations bolstered the division’s performance,” YTL said in a statement. The conglomerate achieved a revenue of RM19.97bil for FY13, a marginal 1.1% decrease compared with the RM20.2bil in FY12. The marginal decrease in revenue, the group said, was due mainly to more competitive pricing in the cement industry, timing differences of new project launches and the completion of residential projects in Singapore in the property development division, as well as lower fuel oil trading volumes recorded in the group’s merchant multi-utilities division.

“However, this was offset by revenue increases from our hotel and construction operations, as well as higher contributions from the group’s plant operation and maintenance business.” The new additions to the hotel division this year included the Sydney Harbour, Brisbane and Melbourne Marriott Hotels in Australia, and the opening of The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur and Gaya Island Resort in Borneo, all of which augmented the division’s results. Under its listed units, YTL Power International Bhd achieved a net profit of RM1.07bil in FY13 compared with RM1.23bil in FY12, owing to better pricing in the water and sewerage business, a one-off gain on derecognition of financial assets, a gain on the acquisition of an associate company and improved margins on electricity sales.

YTL Land and Development Bhd’s net profit for FY13, meanwhile, rose slightly from RM25mil in FY12 to RM25.2mil. Revenue was locked in at RM184.7mil compared with RM581.4mil in FY12, mainly due to timing differences of new project launches and the absence of revenue contributed by offshore subsidiaries following the completion of projects. YTL e-Solutions Bhd’s net profit for the period was at RM32mil compared with RM34.5mil in FY12, due to the accrual of contributions amounting to RM10.9mil to the Universal Service Provision fund established under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1988 and managed by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.

Want a hotel room but can't be bothered to search the multiple reservation sites? The new breed of comparison sites, such as Trivago, Kayak and Travelsupermarket.com, promise to do the shopping around for you. But a Guardian Money price check has found that no single site produces guaranteed best prices – and that travellers should check all three before buying. Trivago is spending millions on a TV advertising campaign where a couple search for a room in Barcelona. "We compare over 100 websites to find your ideal hotel at the best price," says the voiceover. But despite promising to find the best price, some of the comparison sites lead holidaymakers into paying significantly over the odds. For example, we tested prices for a long weekend in Seville this September. Trivago found 14 websites offering rooms at the three-star Itaca hotel, and said the cheapest was Travel Republic, at £75 a night. Kayak listed eight sites offering rooms at the same hotel, and said the cheapest was On Hotels at £109 a night. TravelSupermarket did not list the Itaca. In other words, a traveller could pay 45% more using Kayak for the same hotel on the same nights. In general, Trivago offered better value than the other two, but not in all cases. It said the best price for the four-star Isla Cartuja in Seville was £60 a night, after checking 22 websites, with Olotels named as the best value. But on Kayak, a search of 12 websites found a price of £52 a night, via HRS. TravelSupermarket said the best price for the Isla Cartuja hotel was at On Hotels, quoting us £61.50 a night. So in this instance, Trivago was 15% more expensive than Kayak, but a little cheaper than TravelSupermarket.

Sometimes the sites said rooms were sold out when they were available elsewhere. For example, Kayak and TravelSupermarket said that the Melia Sevilla was sold out for the dates we selected, but Trivago said it could find rooms at the hotel via Travel Republic. Can travellers find better value by going direct to the hotel websites themselves, rather than the comparison sites? Industry insiders say the reservation sites take as much as 25% commission from the hotels, so it should be possible for the hotels to undercut the likes of Trivago and Kayak. Indeed, most hotel groups say they offer a "best price guarantee". However, in our research, we found little evidence that this is the case. The Itaca's own website wanted £117 a night (compared to £75 via Trivago) while the Isla Cartuja wanted £62.60 a night (compared to £52 at Kayak).
Many viewers of its ads might imagine that Trivago is completely independent from the sites it is searching. But in December last year travel site Expedia bought a majority stake for nearly £400m. It is a similar picture at Kayak, which was acquired late last year by Priceline Group for £1.1bn. Priceline also owns reservation giants Booking.com and Agoda.com, while Expedia owns Hotels.com, Venere.com and Hotwire.com.
Both Trivago and Kayak told Money they operate entirely independently to their parent groups. Indeed, Money's research found no evidence that Trivago pushes shoppers into Expedia or that Kayak takes people into Booking.com. But we found (admittedly on a small sample compared to the millions of rooms the sites book every month) that Trivago frequently led buyers into deals from the independent firms Travel Republic and Olotels, while Kayak took users into deals from OnHotels and HRS.

A spokeswoman for Trivago said: "We are in no special relationship with any of our partners and there are no ownership stakes. We do charge our partners when a user clicks on their offer from our website. All our partners are treated equally and we always show the best offers first – this does not change according to the partner." Kayak told Money: "We strive to show the total price, with an accurate reflection of taxes and fees. If suppliers can't meet that standard for some components, we will exclude their results for that given element. We manage this process diligently, which may account for some of the differences you appear to have found. It is always our intention to show the lowest possible price, including taxes and fees to provide transparency for our users." The hotel booking business has been the subject of a major investigation by the Office of Fair Trading. It centred on allegations that Expedia and Booking.com were insisting on "rate parity" from hotel chains, which prevented competitive discounting. This week the OFT said real competition was, in reality, relatively limited. Booking.com and Expedia have now agreed to "relax existing restrictions" so that rival agents can provide discounts on room rates. But the threat of multimillion pound fines and penalties has been lifted, with the OFT saying it will close the investigation if the sites accept and abide by the agreement.
The new guidelines are likely to result in an explosion of loyalty schemes which will offer prices somewhere between current advertised rates and those available on "top secret" sites where the buyer only finds the name of the hotel after booking.

Napier’s newest chic hotel has been named a finalist in the Hospitality New Zealand Awards being announced in Queenstown next month. The Viceroy has been named a finalist in the best redeveloped accommodation hotel category and is up against two other hotels in the country. The Viceroy is one of some 16 categories which en-compasses everything from a country pub in Northland to an up-market gastro bar in Auckland through to the new Napier Hotel to a café in Southland. Hospitality NZ Chief Executive Bruce Robertson said the finalists in this years’ Awards for Excellence reflect the country’s food, beverage and accommodation providers are yet again at the forefront of professional business operations in New Zealand and can justifiably hold their heads high in any commercial environment.

“There is far more positivity in the wider hospitality industry than there has been for a number of years, and the commercial attitude demonstrated in the entries submitted by the finalists in this year’s awards reflects that. “That optimism is mirrored in the amount of capital investment now being spent on premises. New hospitality businesses are emerging at locations throughout the country, while existing businesses are renovating, refurbishing and expanding – motivated by their owners’ confidence in growing consumer spend.
“Some of that investment has been substantial – well into the seven figures – and would not have been undertaken lightly. As a result, employment is growing – supported by a stronger emphasis on recruitment, training and staff retention…all of which were themes seen in many of the awards entries from these finalists.”
Viceroy Hotel Manager Travis Moriarty says he is delighted to be named a finalist in these prestigious awards and all the hard work that has gone into the refurbishment has paid off by being awarded a finalist position. “The team in Napier has worked hard to ensure we have a hotel that we can be proud of and can offer guests and unique stay in a comfortable surrounding with a fantastic restaurant Delmonico’s offering food and beverages.”

The rooms and the conference facility is also a bonus for the hotel said Mr Moriarty. “To have the help of GD (Brent Gibson) Design Concepts who did amazing job with the fit out of the hotel lobby and restaurant has helped us secure being a finalist in these awards,” said Mr Moriarty. Hospitality NZ’s Bruce Robertson said it was also encouraging to see such a broad spectrum of business ownerships represented in the list of finalists – from private companies and family-run venues, through to large corporate entities with a multi-national presence. Entrants into the Hospitality New Zealand Awards for Excellence are judged over a six week period by a panel of independent industry professionals who assess every competitor on a range of commercial and operational criteria – including staff training and human resources, customer service, marketing and promotional activities, and the demonstration of business growth.

HOTELS are filling up for the holiday break, and in some case occupancy is over 90 per cent, Cyprus Hotels Association PASYXE head Haris Loizides has said. Hotels are filling up but there are cases where there is still space,” Loizides said. He added that most Cypriots who visit the eastern part of the island such as Protaras prefer not to stay at hotels as they tend to have their own houses or flats.

“Following research which we have carried out over the last three days, Paphos hotels and getaways in mountainous regions are the most popular with locals,” he said. Loizides added that Limassol has also recently begun picking-up with the hope that Larnaca too could draw in more last-minute visitors in the coming days. He said more flights were needed to help bring more tourists to the island.

“There has been a substantial reduction in the number of flights from Germany, something which we need to look into,” he said. Loizides said there had been an increase in arrivals from Russia and other countries from the former USSR.

Luxury Hotels In San Diego|"Plan B: Use Frequent Flier Miles For Hotels & Cars"

It’s time to book your vacation and you’re frustrated: You can find any award seats to buy with your frequent flier miles. Plan B: Use your miles for the hotel and car rental and pay for the plane tickets. This week’s Middle Seat shows how airlines are using new technology to let customers use miles to book hotel rooms, rental cars and vacation packages without the hassle of phone calls, certificates or exchanges. Just put in your destination and dates and offers come flying priced in miles instead of dollars. While the value you get for the miles isn’t great, it is improving and can be good if you hit on a promotion or special. Elite-level frequent fliers get offered significantly better prices, too. A room at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress in Orlando, Fla., over Labor Day weekend was priced by American Airlines at 8,150 miles a night for platinum-level frequent fliers, a 50% discount off what American offered regular members of its AAdvantage program. For platinum members, that’s descent value for the miles: 1.7 cents per mile for the room priced at $139 a night on Hotels.com.

One penny per mile is about the average value for car rentals and hotels using airline miles, according to a study by IdeaWorks Co., a loyalty program consulting firm. One cent also turns out to be close to the average value people get for their frequent flier miles when they use them for standard domestic coach trips. Experienced frequent fliers know the best way to maximize dollars for your mile is to use them for long-haul international business-class tickets and upgrades. But those can be hard to book, especially at reduced “saver’’ mileage levels. For people with plenty of miles in accounts, defraying the cost of hotels and car rentals with their miles can be prudent. “It’s replacement for Ben Franklin and George Washington,’’ said mileage expert Randy Petersen, president of publisher Frequent Flyer Services. “Most people have more miles than money, and these deals actually hold great value since they replace money.’’

American, United, jetBlue, Southwest and others have interesting offerings in hotels, car rentals and packages. In general, click on redeem miles/points on the airline web site and then look for hotels or car rentals. If you have elite status, you may have to log in again to have it recognized since many airlines use Switchfly Inc. to handle these bookings on a separate site customized to look like one of the airline’s pages. Check out the deals next time you can’t find the free ticket you need, and shop frequently. Airlines are experimenting with promotions and sales in this area.

Brian Linden welcomed the guests to his boutique hotel in one of its courtyards at the end of a cobblestone alley here, surrounded by old stone walls and polished wood balconies. He invited the group, from Greenwich, Conn., to peruse the hotel’s book collection, which he created years ago as a doctoral candidate in Sinology at Stanford University. “And if any of you are light sleepers, what I recommend is, turn on the fan for some white noise,” Mr. Linden said. “Because there’s no white noise here at all.” The hotel is far from the noise of any major city, which Mr. Linden, an American who first arrived in China in 1984 as a student, thinks is one of its draws. He and his wife, Jeanee, are among a small number of foreign entrepreneurs in rural China who operate boutique hotels in restored properties that have historic charm. They converted a courtyard residential complex in Yunnan Province, built before the Communist revolution, into the Linden Centre.

More hotel rooms are being built in China than anywhere else in the world, according to data compiled by STR Global, a market forecaster. At the top end, luxury brands like Aman Resorts and Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts are racing to open new hotels in the country. For some rooms, they are charging China’s emerging superrich the equivalent of more than a thousand dollars a night. Mr. Linden and other foreign owners of smaller boutique hotels say they would rather offer tourists more distinctive lodging. Like Japan’s ryokans, Italy’s villas and America’s Victorian bed-and-breakfasts, China’s boutique retreats could lure travelers with their link to the past, especially since they have been replaced in major cities by modern buildings. In China’s upscale hotel market, “nobody’s taking the lead to do anything sustainably; all they’re doing is just tapping into a flow of tourists,” Mr. Linden said. “Some people have to come in here and really show China that there are other models, and those people have to be fairly altruistic because when we started, this wasn’t a very lucrative type of project.”

Guests at the smaller independent hotels like Mr. Linden’s include a smattering of wealthy Chinese seeking escape from the bustle of big cities, but the vast majority are foreigners. Mr. Linden’s hotel is comfortable, but he offers few frills. He said that most Chinese who can afford to stay — nightly rates range from 900 to 1,200 renminbi, or about $145 to $195 — typically prefer more luxurious accommodations that include television sets and air-conditioning. The Linden Centre is a 25-minute taxi ride from Dali, a popular Yunnan destination, and a morning’s drive from Lijiang, a city of 1.2 million that is one of China’s largest magnets for domestic tourists. Chris Barclay, whose riverside boutique hotel in Guangxi Province features a restored mud-brick barn, said that many of his Chinese guests booked for three nights. But they often leave after the first, out of frustration with the lack of amenities. Local officials are intrigued by his project, Mr. Barclay said, but are amazed that any hotelier would market such humble lodgings to upscale travelers.

For the officials, it would be like “building a hotel out of ice in Lapland,” Mr. Barclay said with a laugh. “They’re still trying to process it.” But Huang Yinwu, an architect in Yunnan who for several years led a historical restoration in the Shaxi Valley financed by the Swiss government, said many of the urban Chinese he has met, whether backpackers or high-end travelers, are increasingly open to rustic getaways. For now, a handful of foreign hotel operators appear to dominate China’s market for boutique retreats. They acknowledge that their work can be challenging. It took the Lindens three years to restore their courtyard complex, in part because it is protected by the same national heritage regulations that apply to the Great Wall. The restoration was complicated by jurisdictional battles among local, provincial and national heritage officials, Mr. Linden said. Mr. Barclay had to negotiate with a village council that opposed his plan to install toilets in his Yunnan Province inn, which was built during the Qing dynasty. (He ended up renovating some nearby public toilets.) It also has taken several years to train his Chinese staff to cater to foreign guests, he said. And because foreigners are not allowed to own land, those who manage boutique hotels under lease agreements are at the mercy of the local authorities. “Legally, it’s a big mess,” said Julien Minet, a French ethnologist who operates a small bed-and-breakfast inn in a quiet village in Anhui Province. “Maybe one day I will lose everything, and I’m prepared for this.” As for marketing, the hoteliers say they depend on word of mouth and their Web sites to attract guests, mainly foreigners. Mr. Barclay and Mr. Linden lecture about their work when they travel. And the Lindens have high school exchange programs and allow international scholars to stay free in exchange for giving talks, practices Mr. Linden said helped raise his hotel’s profile.

Although the number of Chinese guests is slowly increasing, the entrepreneurs say they are not in a hurry to advertise in the mainland market. The boutique hoteliers are all doing well enough by catering to mainly foreign clientele. Mr. Linden said the occupancy rate at the 16-room hotel is now 65 percent to 70 percent. A sister hotel in Xizhou is tentatively scheduled to open next year, and the Lindens are pursuing other projects across Yunnan Province, including one on a tea plantation near the China-Myanmar border. The Lindens’ hotel is far from an authentic representation of China, said Ian Rowen, a geography doctoral candidate at the University of Colorado. However, he said, the Lindens have created a novel and tasteful way to introduce international tourists to Chinese and some ethnic-minority traditions. “It’s a good example of the way that heritage tourism can proceed,” said Mr. Rowen, who has worked in China’s tourism industry and conducted academic research at the Lindens’ hotel.

The Lindens, who also own an art gallery a few hours north of Chicago, discovered their Yunnan property in 2005 while traveling across China in search of a place to begin their dream project. They signed a 20-year lease in 2007. Part of the draw was that the complex, which covers about 3,700 square meters, or nearly 40,000 square feet, had escaped destruction during the Cultural Revolution of the 1960s. But it badly needed a face-lift. For the next three years, the couple poured about $600,000 of their savings into a restoration. “We never were building equity in the buildings, because we don’t own them,” Mr. Linden said. “Our equity in the future is really just our brand. And that’s tied so much to Jeanee’s and my story.”

Striking workers at the Toronto Plaza Hotel are upping pressure on management after nearly 11 weeks on the picket lines have failed to break a labour impasse. About 40 workers at the 200-room hotel near the intersection of Highway 401 and Jane St. walked off the job on May 30 to protest cuts to wages, benefits and pensions, as well as what their union local described as “a culture of disrespect.” On Thursday, the Ontario Federation of Labour plans to hold a rally in front of the hotel on Wilson Ave. to bolster the half-dozen or so workers who have been taking shifts waving placards on the sidewalk. Mohamed Baksh, a representative for the workers’ United Steelworkers local, said employees accepted a wage freeze and cuts to their benefits and pensions in 2011 to help out the struggling business, with the understanding that those would be reinstated in spring of 2013.

“Essentially we gave them a break for two years,” Baksh said. But when negotiations for a new contract began, hotel owner Rehan Chaudary wanted to trim wages and reneged on returning benefits, said Baksh. Wage cuts would range from about $5 per hour to about $1 per hour. The hotel has paid partial costs for workers to retain life, accident and death insurance through the USW, said Baksh. Ionie Anderson worked in housekeeping for 14 years and would see her $13.44 per hour wage fall to $12.44. “All of the cutbacks, dropping the benefits, the pay,” Anderson said of her reasons for picketing. Anderson said her children are grown, which has taken some pressure off her household. But many employees are single parents trying to provide for their families, she said. Callif Smith, a single mother of three, has worked at the hotel since 2000. “I have three kids to send to school. I can’t work part-time for minimum wage,” Smith said. “We didn’t need to go on strike — just give us some benefits. I have small kids, they need benefits.”

Chaudary said the company wants to get their employees back to work and give them “a very good package.” But the recession and the ballooning number of hotels in the area hit the Toronto Plaza Hotel hard.
Its rates and occupancy levels have fallen against competition from the likes of the Hilton, Marriott and Holiday Inn chains. Chaudary, who has a number of other companies, said he’s spent millions on the hotel since buying it four years ago, but it has yet to turn a financial corner. “It still doesn’t pay its way, we’re in the negative. Every month I’m putting money in to save this company. We’re struggling,” said Chaudary.

“(The workers) got to realize something here. This place is dead. If we don’t have a hotel, they don’t have a job, I don’t have a job … I know it’s a kick in the butt, but you know what? It’s a kick in the butt for me, too.”

Italy's tax police said they were seizing houses, hotels and other assets totalling 250 million euros ($336 million) as part of an investigation of alleged false accounting and market manipulation by the former owners of insurer Fondiaria-Sai. The investigation led last month to the arrest of Fondiaria's former owner Salvatore Ligresti, members of his family and various managers.

The arrests related to a 600 million-euro hole found in the group's claims reserves which had not been disclosed to the market, police said at the time. Police said in a statement on Monday that the alleged crimes resulted in illicit profits of 251.6 million euros, prompting the confiscation of assets worth an equivalent amount across 25 Italian regions. They said the seizures included the Ligresti family's Milanese estate, along with upscale hotels they own in Turin, Sicily and the mountainous Dolomite region. "We believe this seizure is totally unjustified," Salvatore Ligresti's lawyer Gianluigi Tizzoni told Sky Tg24 channel.

No one at Fondiaria was immediately available for comment, while lawyers for Jonella Ligresti, the daughter of Salvatore, said they would appeal against the move. All those accused in the case have denied any wrongdoing. Fondiaria's position as Italy's leading motor insurer has been hit by growing competition and a drop in the number of people buying car insurance during the country's longest post-war recession.Rival insurer Unipol agreed last year to rescue Fondiaria in a complex takeover deal, effectively ousting the once powerful Ligresti family from the company it had controlled. The tie-up with Unipol is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The chief executive of Italy's largest bank Unicredit, which is the biggest creditor of Fondiaria and the Ligresti's holding company Premafin, said in July the arrests would not affect the deal.
