This summer I was admittedly somewhat aimless in my holiday planning. On a whim, I contacted the reservations manager at our Bristol Hotel in Opatija and booked five nights for my boyfriend and me.

Having received confirmation of our spontaneous holiday, we quickly got the car shipshape for the trip, packed our traps and set off. Because of the different legal requirements on compulsory equipment in Slovenia and Croatia , we bought a set of spare bulbs for the car as well as a second reflective jacket. All that was left was to type Ulica Maršala Tita 108, Opatija into the GPS and off we were to more southerly climes.

After just five-and-a-half hours of driving, we were greeted in gorgeous Opatija by sunshine and 30-plus degrees. We went up to our room and took in the fantastic view of the sea from our very own balcony before packing our swimming gear and heading off to the sea just 5 minutes away. The way to the water took us through a beautiful park that is situated directly in front of the hotel. The receptionist gave us another insider’s tip where we could find a little cove with especially beautiful, clear waters: Mošćenička Draga. This little town, just 15 km from Opatija, is popular among visitors and locals alike as a place to enjoy the sun.

In the evening, we strolled along the famous lungomare, Optaija’s seaside promenade, dined on delicious fish and seafood, and enjoyed a slice of Opatija Camellia, a cake that is famous in all of Croatia and beyond.

Unfortunately, the five days seemed to pass in a flash. But there always is a next time, and the Vienna International Hotels & Resorts have another 28 hotels that are worth visiting.
