The Quality Inn and Suites, 7500 Vantage Dr., will be closed until at least this afternoon and face increased inspections for four months after recent inspections found serious food-safety violations. The Columbus Board of Health voted on the suspension at its meeting yesterday. Nobody from the Far North Side hotel attended. Violations in recent months included unsanitary utensils and surfaces, lack of food-safety knowledge on the part of the person in charge and foods held at improper temperatures. The board also voted for four months of increased monitoring of the Popeye’s Chicken, 1084 Cleveland Ave.; and Los Mariachis, 3610 S. High St. Employees of both restaurants also must have appropriate food-safety training, the board said.

Located in Croatia's Dubrovnik Riviera, known for its scenic bays, sandy beaches, steep cliffs and forested islands, the village of Kupari was once an idyllic summer getaway for the high-ranking military officers of the Yugoslav People's Army. Today, the tourist complex lay in ruins, shell-scarred from attacks during the Croatian War of Independence in the early 1990s. Water damage and rust have marred Kupari's once-majestic hotels, now overgrown with vegetation. One of the massive hotels, the Grand Hotel, was built in 1920, according to the Zupa Duborvocka Tourist Board. It housed 139 beds and featured an indoor swimming pool, and luxurious rooms with stunning ocean views. Photographer Ben Fredericson captured the images of the ruins of the hotel, now covered in graffiti and crumbling in disrepair, in the slideshow above. The Grand Hotel, and the three other hotels that made up the Kupari Tourist Complex, were severely damaged from attacks and eventually abandoned 20 years ago, but extreme weather have also contributed to its state of eerie disrepair.

"As structures deteriorate, rainfall entering buildings can cause extensive water damage, including significant flooding," according to Weather.com Meteorologist Christopher Dolce. In addition to rain, freeze and thaw cycles also cause the buildings to crack and crumble, and strong winds can peel away at roofing and siding, he explained.Despite the crumbling buildings in the backdrop, tourists still flock to the crescent-shaped pebble-beach of Kupar, Croatia's most visited Adriatic Sea resort. In 2012, Croatia announced plans to offer Kupari for development, according to Bloomberg News.  The resort will be offered for development of hotels, villas and a conference center, partly through concession and partly through property sales, the Tourism Ministry told Bloomberg. Maybe soon, opulent hotels, homes and amenities will rise again in Kupari. For now, ghostly ruins caused by war and weather litter the bay.

TWO IRISH HOTELS have made it into Expedia’s list of top hotels in the world. The Expedia Insiders’ Select list features the top 100 hotels and is completely independent of advertisers and partners. The Lake Hotel in Killarney is ranked in the 50th place while The River Lee Hotel in Cork comes in at 75. Expedia states that of the 205,000 hotels and resorts on Expedia, only 650 hotels are deemed eligible for the list. Hotels deemed eligible were ranked with a numerical score. Only the top hotels with the highest scores were chosen for the Insiders’ Select list.To make the cut, hotels must have a minimum number of reviews (which they state they verify to be authentic) and a price comparison is made between nearby resorts that have a similar star rating and amenities. Expedia stated they also rely on their expert reviewers to rank the top hotels. The Expedia top 100 list comes out in the same week that the website Hotels.com published a survey that claimed that average prices for rooms in Ireland booked on their site had risen in the last six months. The Irish Hotels Federation, however, says that those numbers are wrong and based on too small a sample size.

An ad seeking unpaid interns to bus tables at Vancouver's Fairmont Waterfront Hotel has sparked a debate about whether unpaid internships take advantage of students. The ad was circulated on Twitter and was reportedly posted on the hotel's career section briefly before it was taken down. "Exceptional service and cuisine are hallmarks of The Fairmont Waterfront dining experience," the ad reads. "As a Busperson, you will take pride in the integral role you play in supporting your Food and Beverage Colleagues and 'setting the stage' for a truly memorable meal." 'Even dishwashing, it's education. It's a lower-end job, but from there it stems to many other things.' — VCC culinary arts head John-Carlo Felicella. Twitter users responded, with a flurry of mostly negative tweets. "Dine at the Fairmont, where breakfast for 2 may be $50+ and your busboy an unpaid intern," wrote Twitter user Norm_Farrell. "It simply exploits the vulnerability of youth and new Canadians who are trying to enter the job market," replied Twitter user nowgreenvoter.

Twitter user TynaMcNair wrote: "I cannot think of a reason this or 'unpaid' training should be allowed in BC, unless non-profit."But John-Carlo Felicella, head of Vancouver Community College's culinary arts department, said interns often have no prior restaurant experience and internships provide them with a way to find out if they're cut out for the industry. "Even dishwashing, it's education," he said. "It's a lower-end job, but from there it stems to many other things." Vancouver Community College requires every restaurant to sign a contract pledging that the unpaid interns aren't taking jobs away from paid employees. Unpaid interns are supposed to work five to 10 hours a week and can only observe and assist. B.C. law states interns cannot do actual work without pay. CBC News contacted the Fairmont Waterfront for comment, and a spokesperson replied with an emailed statement: "As a leading hotel in the city we actively support local schools and work in partnership with them to provide opportunity and access to practical workplace experience."

Manhattan love cheats have hit a new low. With the economy still struggling, more are having illicit trysts in their own pads — and then hiring a maid on the cheap to clean up to avoid renting pricey hotel rooms, sources told The Post. “We don’t ask — we know that we need to check everything: that there is no hair on the floor, in the shower, no hair in the bathtub, no lipstick, nothing there to show that something happened before,” said David Brugiatelli of the cleaning service Little Elves New York. One paranoid philanderer wrote in an instant message to the Handybook maid service, “I need to have a cleaning tomorrow, but the timing is critical. “Girlfriend coming to stay for a week stay needs to be cleaned well and any other female evidence needs to be removed (no hairs, make-up smudges, etc.). “I can count on someone coming without question though right?” The cleaning companies said they’ve seen an uptick — particularly this summer — in requests for last-minute jobs focused on the bedroom. The cost can run as little as $50. “It’s obviously cheaper to have your apartment cleaned than use a hotel room in Manhattan,” said Handybook founder Oisin Hanrahan. The call for a quick-hit cleaning can come at any hour — and always with a request to be discreet. “They say, ‘Can you come now and not announce who you are to the doorman?’ ”said Alpha Living General Manager Andrew Lewis. “They don’t want somebody to know that their house is being cleaned for a specific reason.’’ MyClean rep Mike Brody said his agency has gotten lots of “special requests’’ for maids to concentrate on the bedroom. “Customers will ask us to ‘please make sure to wash and replace the sheets, remove stains and remake the bed,’ ” he said. But Dinee Harris of Great Green Cleaning said that if her agency suspects that an “urgent’ job involves cleaning up after an infidelity, she won’t send a maid out on it because it might put the worker in danger. “Who knows what will happen when the wife comes home,” she said. GetMaid co-founder Demetri Karagas said his single clients will often book a cleaning on their mobile app while they’re on a date — thinking they’re going to get lucky. “We get a lot of, ‘Hey I’m on a date, I’m going to be home in a couple of hours, can you make sure the place is clean?’ ” he said. One frequent customer, Jasper Engel, 24, explained, “You get to that moment on the date and start thinking, ‘Maybe I’m going to bring this girl home with me,’ [and] the first thought that enters your mind is, ‘What does my apartment look like right now?’ “There’s like this magic element — you end up impressing your date without her even knowing you’re impressing her.”

Terrence Howard flew into a violent rage -- throwing his then-estranged wife to the ground, and threatening to slash his own wrists -- after she accused him of cheating ... this according to documents filed by Howard's ex. In the court docs, Michelle Ghent claims the brawl went down in a Toronto hotel room in April ... when she found phone numbers for 6 women in his bag ... and promptly called the women while Howard was in the room. In her filing ... Michelle says the 44-year-old Oscar nominee threw her computer out a window, lifted her off the ground and slammed her down ... and reached for an X-Acto blade and put it to his wrist. Ghent claims Howard also pretended to hang himself with a belt -- and told her, "I'm just thinking if I should kill you first before killing me." Two days after the hotel fight ... Ghent claims Howard continued talking about suicide in text messages.  Her filing includes dozens of texts she claims he sent -- in one, Terrence allegedly said he wishes he "wasn't such a coward and that I had the courage to finish what should have been accomplished in the abortion clinic 44 years ago."

In another text Howard allegedly said he was going to get outpatient treatment for "his addictions and emotional instability" -- and offered to deposit more than $25,000 in her account to cover the damage to her computer. As we previously reported ... Ghent got a temporary restraining order against Howard last month after he allegedly punched her and kicked her during a July vacation in Costa Rica. For his part, Howard claimed she had pepper sprayed him. Terrence and Michelle's divorce was finalized just 2 weeks after the alleged Toronto brawl.

Marriott International, Inc. is set to expand its operations in the South American state of Peru with a brand new Courtyard by Marriott Hotel location in Lima, the country’s third largest city. The hotel is set to join other Marriott-operated hospitality spots in the country, namely the JW Marriott Lima and the JW Marriott Cuzco, both of which are owned by local corporation, Inversiones La Rioja, S.A. The new venue will be developed as per an agreement with the local entity.

Set to be located in the affluent neighborhood of Miraflores, the Courtyard by Marriott in Lima will be a 150-key upscale facility that will benefit from proximity to high quality shopping and dining spots, all in the ambiance created by the ocean. The amenity package that the facility will offer includes a business lobby, a casual dining restaurant, substantial meeting space, a fitness facility and a swimming pool. JW Marriot Lima is a 300-key facility while the JW Marriott Cuzco offers guests 153 rooms to choose from. Lima is regarded as one of the strongest entry points Marriott International has for the Latin American hospitality market, according to company representatives.

This is the first facility operating under the Courtyard by Marriott brand in Peru and according to the hospitality giant’s President of the Caribbean & Latin America division, Craig S. Smith; it will mark the company’s aggressive expansion policy in the area. The company responsible for the development of the venue has voiced its opinion through Alfonso Brazzini, president of the board at Inversiones La Rioja: “With the incredible performance of the JW Marriott Lima, we are confident this hotel will do very well in Lima.”
