Engineers are closely monitoring what is left of the Copthorne Hotel in Christchurch following the building's collapse which forced demolition workers to run for their lives. The site has been closed down until a formal investigation is carried out into yesterday afternoon's collapse. Engineers were today combing the floors that pancaked so dramatically. They want to know why tonnes of concrete caved in unexpectedly with two demolition workers in close proximity. The collapse has triggered Health and Safety inspectors to launch a formal investigation. The driver of a nibbler was tearing away concrete on one of the floors when it happened. Scores of onlookers watched in shock. Eyewitness Ian Thornton said it looked to him "very much" like a close call. "I didn't know whether it was just dust hitting him or whether an actual building was coming down on him," he said, referring to one of the on-site workers.Barrier fences were hastily erected yesterday to keep motorists and pedestrians as far away from the building as possible.

And that was just as well because today a steady stream of Christchurch people headed down to take a look at the aftermath of the collapse. But the new barriers mean they can no longer get as close to the demolition site as they could yesterday. "It's quite dramatic, quite stark really," said John Warren, a Christchurch resident . "It happened so suddenly didn't it. And I'm just amazed that the workmen survived that." Despite hundreds of demolitions in the CBD since the February 2011 earthquake, there has only been one serious accident, a worker falling three metres during the massive Hotel Grand Chancellor demolition. Before starting work, all demolition companies had to sign a charter pledging to protect their workers. John Warren says the Copthorne Hotel collapse is "most probably a reminder there's still a danger in the city." Health and Safety inspectors have banned any further work on the hotel site until a new engineering assessment is complete.

Affordable Hotels In San Diego

It is a rainy, stormy night at the North Sea and Sheldon (Jim Parsons) calls-up Leonard (Jonny Galecki). Leonard tells Sheldon that it is not the right time to call. "Hell to you, too," Sheldon says to him. Hello to the new season of "The Big Bang Theory" and the first episode of the seventh season, "The Hofstadter Insuffiency."Sheldon has called Leonard to complain about something important: "Back to the Future 2 was in the Back to the Future 3 case" and vice versa. Sheldon asks Leonard if he did that or if there is an intruder in the house who did that. Leonard gets knocked-down on the dock and tells Sheldon that he is going inside, while Sheldon thinks Leonard is dodging the question.  A dragon pops-out of the sea and pulls Leonard back into the sea and Sheldon gets-up with a scream. The conversation was Sheldon's dream and he bolts out of the bed and lands right in front of Penny's (Kelly Cuoco) door. "Penny (knock-knock) ... Penny (knock-knock) ... Penny (knock-knock)," Sheldon knocks at her door in his signature style."I was worried that you might be missing Leonard, Sheldon tells Penny when she opens the door with a big question mark look. "And that may be causing you to have bad dreams." Penny figures out that Sheldon had a bad dream. "Sweetie, did you have a bad dream." Sheldon confesses that he did have a bad dream and talk about "Back to Future 2" being in "Back to Future 3" case and Leonard doing that. He tells Penny, "Perhaps I should sleep here, so you don't miss Leonard this much. Cause you've been kind of baby about it." Penny says that it would make her feel better and Sheldon walks rights into her bedroom and closes it, saying "goodnight."

Raj (Kunal Nayyar) is missing his ex-girlfriend Lucy (Kate Micucci) and keeps talking about her, and that he sees her face everywhere and in everything. Sheldon tells him to get his mind back on the stars. Since Amy (Mayim Bialik) and Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) are at a neuroscience conference, Howard (Simon Helberg) offers to go with Raj to an event. Howard wants Raj to be happy, and Sheldon says that he also wants the same but not enough to do anything about it. Amy and Bernadette get calls from Sheldon and Howard, respectively. While Bernadette is having a romantic conversation, Amy is talking about bed-bugs and assuring Sheldon that she won't be bringing them (bed bugs) back. At Penny's place, Sheldon is arranging a 3D Chess set and Penny tells him that, "You always play with Leonard and you miss him." Sheldon replies: "You over-estimate his significance in my life" and goes on to talk about the things Leonard did for him. Penny agrees to play the game with Sheldon, but is eager to lose it as then the game will be over, while Sheldon wants to continue playing as he thinks it is too much fun. Penny is missing Leonard and wonders what he must be doing. Sheldon suggests that they should call him, but soon corrects himself and says that he is "an Island." Penny calls Leonard and keeps the speaker-phone on so Sheldon could also hear the conversation. Leonard is having a great time at the North-Sea. It is not at all a stormy night but he could be seen happily dancing with a group of girls when Penny calls him-up. Leonard tells Penny that he is having the best time of his life.

"I can't believe we were missing that jerk," Penny says. Sheldon: "You were." Sheldon tries to comfort Penny in his Sheldon way. He asks Penny if she is worried that Leonard is having "drunken coitus with another woman" and reveals to her that Leonard asked him to take care of her. Penny puts forward the idea of sharing personal details that they don't know about each other. Sheldon talks about his nine pairs of pants and nine pairs of under-pants, and says that Penny must be having a thousand under-pants. Penny shares that she did a top-less scene in a low budget horror movie about a killer gorilla, and that she was ashamed about that. But, all was good as nothing ever came out. To her horror, Sheldon tells her that he has seen that movie as Howard found it out when they first met. Sheldon tells her about something that he would take to the grave. "A while back, you tube changed its user-interface from a star-base rating system to a thumbs-up rating system. I tell people I'm okay with it. But, I'm really not." Penny is disappointed to hear his big revelation. Sheldon tells her that "you just hurt my feelings" by treating the revelation as if it was nothing. Penny does not see why he must be hurt as it is no big deal. Sheldon tells her that it is a big deal to him and that is the point and Penny sees the point and hugs him.

Amy and Bernadette have their on and off moments, together. At the hotel's restaurant, two men send drinks to them and they are giddy about that as guys are hitting on them and not just Penny. Amy tells Bernadette she can have some fun with one of the men and no one would blame her. Amy is offended by that and asks whether she means that she "could do better than Sheldon.  "You're not married and your boy-friend is kind of Sheldon," Bernadette says. "And, your husband is extremely Howard," Amy replies. "What is your point?"
Later in the room, they share that it was flattering to see strangers send them some drinks and talk about the one they would pick out of the two men. They discover that Amy wants someone like the sex-crazy Howard, while Bernadette is picking the brainy-Sheldon kind. They switch-off the light and sleep-off.

Raj is not making much head-way with the girls at the event despite his new-found ability to talk to them without the assistance of alcohol. Ms Davis (Regina King) from human resource is at the event, too.  Howard tells Raj that Ms Davis' husband left her for someone hotter and young. Raj tells Ms Davis about the infidelity among penguins and that they also get cheated on, but they are still adorable. Howard shakes his head and says, "It was better when you were not able to talk woman." Later, Raj approaches Ms Davis again and talks about his broken-heart and Lucy; and after a lengthy conversation, he tells her that it was good to connect with her at a human level. Ms Davis asks him, "Are you hitting on me." Back at the North Sea, Leonard is produdly showing the top-less scene of Penny to his ship-mates: "that is my girl-friend, I swear to god."

San Diego Vacation Hotels|"Top Airport Hotels"

San Diego Vacation Hotels

The cool, contemporary design of this Terminal 5 hotel leads the way in airport luxury, down to details such as power showers to get your circulation going after a long-haul flight. Enjoy views of planes taking off from behind sound-proof windows. The restaurant offers fine French dining, champagne flows at Perrier Jouet Bar and white-jacked waiters serve lounge cocktails. Top-notch spa, business and conference facilities are a bonus - but there's also a Zen garden. Airport hotels have long been contemptuous of travellers, offering little more than bare-bones facilities in ugly, motel-like buildings that look like something from a 1960s East German movie. But if you dread the thought of yet another ordinary airport hotel, a new generation of establishments is offering more than just a bed. Some have started to match the amenities and luxury trappings you'd expect from city-centre hotels, with deluxe brands such as Fairmont, Hyatt, Kempinski and Sofitel getting into the airport act.

Swimming pools, spa facilities, gyms and massage therapy now soothe cramped bodies, and fine dining restaurants provide far better than airline food. Some of the best airport hotels even lure customers with boutique beers, cooking classes, bicycle rentals and games of virtual golf. In more good news, some airport hotels offer day rates where you can use a guestroom - and all the hotel facilities - for a few hours during an awkwardly-timed layover. Of course, a few basic requirements also have to be met by airport hotels if they want to be considered among the best. Convenience is crucial. A location right in the terminal is perfect, especially if it avoids having to go through customs. Failing that, a short walk or shuttle ride is the limit. A comfortable bed, good shower, dark rooms and absolute quiet are other cravings of the jetlagged. Nobody wants to be desperate for sleep and have to listen to aeroplanes or traffic noise. Here, then, are eight hotels that cut the mustard when it comes to giving exhausted travellers what they want. LAX has little to recommend it, but this cheerful, colourful hotel - a quick ride on the free shuttle - is an exception, and shows airport hotels don't have to be expensive. Check in any time and keep your room for 24 hours. There are also rates for day use. The hotel's Brewsters bar has more than 100 beers (16 on tap), and the outdoor pool bar is dedicated solely to Californian microbreweries. Dubai, the Qantas hub for flights between Australia and Europe, has an airport hotel right in Terminals 1 and 3. A host fast-tracks you from gate to reception, and you don't have to pass immigration control. The hotel has a fitness centre with steam room, jacuzzi and swimming pool, but no restaurant, though you can eat in the terminals. Some guestrooms have massage chairs, and complimentary fruit is a nice touch. While not directly at the airport, this eco-conscious hotel is just a five-minute, free shuttle ride away, and is conveniently on the direct MTR train route into Hong Kong, just 30 minutes away. It's also right at Citygate Outlets, a shopping mall devoted to outlet and discount brand-name stores. Mid-range prices, good dining options, a swimming pool, 24-hour gym and sleek, chic guestrooms make this a great choice for a quick Hong Kong transit. With Qantas flying to Dallas Fort Worth, it's good to know that you'll find one of the world's best airport hotels inside a glass cube in Terminal D - it even offers weekend gourmet cooking classes. This stylish hotel has a spa, gym and rooftop saltwater pool to ward off deep-vein thrombosis. Guestrooms feature pillow-top "Grand Beds", soaking tubs as well as showers, and huge flat-screen televisions. And hooray - the curtains actually work, completely darkening the room.

You could be forgiven for thinking you'd wandered into a stylish European home-design store as you enter this hotel's lobby. It has 230 rooms but feels like a boutique hotel, with nice touches such as free use of Apple computers and Wi-Fi, a library filled with art books, a suitcase drawer under the bed, and mood lighting and music. Guestrooms are all the same, and have king-size beds and rain showers in rooms. As soon as you see this Singapore hotel, with its stylised metal latticework facade and futuristic lobby with orange sofas, you know you're in for something different: more upmarket urban resort than airport hotel. The aim is to get you to unwind. Chill out to yoga exercises on your TV, listen to relaxing music on a pre-loaded iPod, have a jetlag reflexology treatment in the spa, or float in the lagoon-style tropical pool. Poised above the departures terminal (just ride the escalator upward), this is the only airport hotel ever featured in the Condé Nast Top 100 Gold List. Eye masks and good soundproofing are provided for the perfect shut-eye but, if you're wide awake, you can hire a BMX bike and take a spin on nearby trails. The Jetside Bar has fabulous views of the airport action, and telescopes in some guestrooms provide thrilling looks at landing aircraft. As demand increases for hotel rooms in the U.S. amid growth in tourism in some cities, developers are turning to pre-existing buildings to cut construction time and save money. New York has seen a flurry of conversion projects, including the Knickerbocker Hotel in Times Square. It originally was developed as a hotel in 1906 and is being restored by FelCor Lodging Trust Inc. FCH -0.83% as a lodging after spending decades as an office building. Other hotel conversions around the country include 59 Temple Place in Boston, which is being renovated from an office-and-retail property by Oxford Capital Group LLC, and the Peal Brewery, in San Antonio, which Kimpton Hotel & Restaurant Group LLC is converting into a 146-room hotel. Oxford Capital, which has converted or restored nine Chicago properties into hotels, is moving ahead with its 10th project in the city. With partner Angelo Gordon & Co., Oxford is buying the 21-story London Guarantee Building for $53 million and plans to convert the structure into a high-end hotel, which is set to open in 2015. The trend highlights one of the changing dynamics of the commercial-real-estate industry. Hotels, which had been big losers during the recession, have rebounded and are profitable, while office property continues to lag behind due in part to slow jobs growth. That has been an especially big problem for older office buildings.

"The office market isn't thriving as much in some markets, so a conversion from an office building to a hotel is an attractive alternative," said Rachel Roginsky, founder of Boston consulting firm Pinnacle Advisory Group. By converting buildings to hotels, owners hope the buildings will produce higher incomes and better returns on their investments. In Chicago last year, Oxford converted the bottom fourth of the 52-story former IBM IBM -0.53% building, located at 330 North Wabash Ave., into a 330-room Langham Hotel, which opened in July. John Rutledge, Oxford's chief executive, said his firm likes conversion projects because they can turn around properties faster than they would if starting from scratch. "We can get property converted more quickly," he said. "You don't have to dig a hole." On average, he said they also save between 30% and 50% on construction costs. According to research firm PKF Hospitality Research, hotel occupancy nationwide through August rose to 63.9% from 58.8% in August 2010. Revenue per available room, a benchmark of profitability, increased to $70.51 in 2013 from $57.50 two years earlier. Both figures have largely recovered to prerecession levels.

The improving hotel market also reflects stronger tourism. During New York's 2013 fiscal year, which ended June 30, there were more than 52 million visitors, up 2.1% from 2011, according to a report from the mayor's office. Chicago saw 46.2 million visitors last year, an increase of 6.2% from the year before and just under 2007's record 46.3 million visitors, according to data from the Chicago mayor's office. Tourism-related spending in the U.S. rose 2.5% last year after a 7.5% jump the year before, according to the U.S. Commerce Department. To be sure, not all hotel conversion opportunities are being realized. The owners of Chicago Place, a vacant shopping mall located on the Magnificent Mile, a Windy City retail and entertainment corridor, brought in a broker to begin marketing the property as a hotel in recent months, but they still haven't found a buyer.Alex Adjmi, president of A&H Acquisitions, one of the owners of Chicago Place, said the company received strong interest from a big-box tenant but ended up passing on that idea. "We wanted to keep it upscale, and that's the character of the street," he said.

Most hotel conversions involve older offices or warehouses because those buildings have some historic appeal and are often located in prime neighborhoods near business and tourist centers. "You save probably a year in construction costs, exterior appearance, city zoning and other approvals," said Ted Mandigo, principal at Chicago-based consulting firm TR Mandigo & Co. Jonathan Jaeger, Pinnacle's New York vice president, said another motivation for conversion projects is the upscale clientele they can draw with the property's historic charm.

Courtyard Hotels In San Diego|"Is This A Hospital Or A Hotel?"

Courtyard Hotels In San Diego

As the new St. Joseph’s Hospital in Highland, Ill., prepared to open in August, its chief executive exulted, “You feel like you could be at the Marriott.” In the $63 million community hospital, patients all enjoy private rooms, with couches, flat-screen TVs and views of nature. Its lobby features stone fireplaces and a waterfall. Some hospitals in the United States, like Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles, have long been associated with deluxe accommodations, and others have always had suites for V.I.P.’s. But today even many smaller hospitals often offer general amenities, like room service and nail salons, more often associated with hotels than health care. In the current boom of hospital construction, private rooms have become the norm. And some health economists worry that the luxury surroundings are adding unneeded costs to the nation’s $2.7 trillion health care bill. There are some medical arguments for the trend — private rooms, for example, could lower infection rates and allow patients more rest as they heal. But the main reason for the largess is marketing.

In a highly competitive field, patients — sometimes now referred to as “guests” — appreciate amenities. The tactic works. “We found that patient demand correlates much better to amenities than quality of care,” said Dr. John Romley, a research professor at the Leonard D. Schaeffer Center for Health Policy and Economics of the University of Southern California, who has studied the trend. That means that hospitals can improve their bottom line and their reputation by focusing more on hospitality than health care — offering organic food by a celebrity chef rather than lowering medication errors, for example. As a result, American hospitals are looking less and less like their more utilitarian counterparts in Europe, where the average hospital charges per day are often less than a quarter of those in the United States, according to the International Federation of Health Plans.

The Henry Ford health system in Michigan caused a stir after it hired a hotel industry executive, Gerard van Grinsven of the Ritz-Carlton Group, in 2006 to run its new hospital, Henry Ford West Bloomfield. He had opened 20 hotels and his “focus on people and service excellence” has helped the hospital thrive in a competitive market, said Nancy M. Schlichting, Henry Ford’s chief executive, who decided to hire him. The idea was to take care of patients’ needs, she said, clinical and otherwise. While no one is getting nostalgic for traditional hospital food, open wards or revealing gowns, some worry that hospitals are going too far with the creature comforts. They are particularly concerned since most hospitals are nonprofit, so construction — directly or indirectly — is subsidized with public money.

With the prospect on the horizon of the Affordable Care Act’s lowering reimbursement, and interest rates rising, the hospital construction boom appears to be slowing. And, in choosing a hospital, patients should probably think beyond room service anyway. Many years ago, when I was a doctor-in-training, I was assigned to work on a hospital floor with V.I.P. rooms. Though the views were spectacular, the cardiac arrest team could not get there as quickly as it could to the regular wards.

A company that operates high-end hotels and resorts is joining the ranks of marketers in the lodging and travel categories that seek to sell potential customers on accumulating rich experiences rather than expensive possessions. The company, Rosewood Hotels and Resorts, is introducing a campaign that carries the theme, “A sense of place,” which is complemented with another phrase, “A true journey never ends.” The budget for the campaign — including print and digital ads, online video and a redesigned Web site — is estimated at $8 million. The campaign presents striking shots in a “living canvas” style by a Danish photographer, Anders Overgaard, of interesting and unusual things to do in cities where Rosewood has properties. For instance, one image, titled “Getting Lost in the Moment,” depicts a Temazcal ritual at the Rosewood Mayakoba in Riviera Maya, Mexico.A second ad, titled “Behind the Magic Curtain,” shows a couple in formal wear backstage at a ballet in New York, where the Carlyle is a Rosewood hotel. A third ad, titled “Hitting All the Right Notes,” features guests enjoying a pianist at the Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle.

Other experiences that are highlighted in the campaign include sailing a dhow and riding bicycles in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, where Rosewood has one hotel and intends to open a second, in 2015; and getting fitted for a dress and taking a calligraphy master class in Beijing, where Rosewood is to open a hotel early next year. The campaign arrives as the company proceeds with expansion plans that involve doubling the number of properties under the Rosewood brand umbrella within five years. In the short term, in addition to the new hotel in Beijing, a Rosewood hotel is scheduled to open in London next month. Beyond that, the company has proposed opening seven additional hotels, in markets like Bali, Indonesia; Chongquing, China; Nassau, the Bahamas; and Phukut, Thailand. The campaign is being created for Rosewood by AgencySacks in New York, which specializes in advertising aimed at consumers at the upper end of the market; its slogan is, “We influence the affluent.” The Web site redesign is being handled by the Hong Kong office of Isobar, which is part of the Dentsu Aegis Network division of Dentsu.

AgencySacks has been working for Rosewood since 2004 and was kept on after the company changed hands in 2011, when the previous owners sold to New World Hospitality, a unit of New World China Land, for $800 million. Rosewood is “a very-well-recognized brand,” says Sonia Cheng, chief executive of the company, which has offices in Dallas and Hong Kong. “We saw the opportunity to take it to the next level and expand Rosewood aggressively.” The campaign is intended to be part of efforts to “completely revamp” Rosewood “from a brand identity front,” she adds, to “keep up with what luxury travelers are looking for.¶ The campaign theme represents “a strong philosophy,” Ms. Cheng says, that gives the brand “a more modern look and approach.” “What Rosewood has right now is special,” she adds. “We want to make it as ‘un-hotel’ as possible.” By that, Ms. Cheng explains, she means that she wants to distinguish Rosewood from lodging chains that, as they grow bigger, “focus on quantity” rather than quality and make staying at each property “a cookie-cutter experience.” Rosewood, by comparison, tries to make each hotel “individualized,” she says, and let each have “its own personality that embodies local culture.”“What luxury travelers are looking for is not extravagance, but experience,” she adds. A campaign for Loews Hotels and Resorts, introduced in July, also seeks to portray staying at each property as a unique experience. The Loews campaign, which carries the theme “The room you need,” is created by the Catch New York agency.

After Ms. Cheng came to Rosewood following the change in ownership, a brand consultant and graphic designer, Robert Louey, “helped us with the direction” of the makeover, she says. Then AgencySacks was brought in to work on a new campaign. In many instances after a company changes hands, one of the first things the new owner does is look for a new agency. In this instance, Ms. Cheng says, she wanted to keep AgencySacks because “they know Rosewood inside out.” “It was a smart choice to make,” she adds. Introducing “A sense of place” as the new theme for Rosewood speaks to the desire to “create experiences for the guests,” Ms. Cheng says, in a “living canvas” approach. As part of that, the company is bringing experts it calls “curators” to the hotels, she adds, “and give the inside scoop on each location to the guests.” The curators come from areas like “the entertainment industry, the fashion industry, the art world,” Ms. Cheng says, and include Piers Morgan for the coming hotel in London; Condoleezza Rice for the Rosewood Sand Hill in Menlo Park, Calif.; and Nina Garcia of Marie Claire magazine and “Project Runway” for the Carlyle in New York.

Under the previous ownership, says Andrew Sacks, president at AgencySacks, “the brand was a looser coalition” of hotels and resorts, with “each property individually named.” Now, the idea is “to make Rosewood a much stronger brand, a more prominent name,” he adds, which “has given us the ability to finally create a consistent brand campaign.” Giving “the affluent guest” a chance to “have a more immersive experience” makes sense, Mr. Sacks says, particularly when “some affluent travelers, our affluent travelers, are a little more creative, a little more artsy, and want experiences that are unique and different.” The photographs in the ads, in shining a spotlight on “moments that are unique and different,” he adds, are almost always devoted to experiences that are separate from the amenities or features of the hotel or resort. “The luxury of the hotels is table stakes” with the well-off target audience, Mr. Sacks says, so there is no need for the ads to show “tuxedoed waiters or 500-thread-count sheets.” That approach also “speaks to the confidence of the brand,” he adds, that it “doesn’t need to say” how luxurious each property is.“The main stereotype” about the affluent is that “they want fancy, they want Champagne and caviar,” Mr. Sacks says. “And they do.”  “Where a lot of advertising to the affluent falls short,” he adds, is in not realizing that the potential customers “have developed good radar to people trying to sell to them, not only advertisers but also people like real estate salesmen.” When marketers “use a lot of hyperbole, or the word ‘luxury,’ the affluent say, ‘They don’t get me,' ” Mr. Sacks says, “particularly postrecession.” High-income consumers “are looking to broaden their lives beyond the superficial trappings of luxury,” Mr. Sacks says, while at the same time they want to “pursue their experiential passions without sacrificing any of the wonderful things” that they expect when staying at a luxury hotel.

At 81, Bill Marriott is still pushing boundaries. Last week, the son of the founder of the hotel chain that bears the family name launched an “edgy” new hotel off London’s Oxford Street. Next year, Marriott International will be opening its first hotel in Rwanda. “It’s not traditional,” says Marriott, the chain’s executive chairman, of the London Edition hotel, opened in joint venture with boutique hotel guru Ian Schrager on the site of the former Berners Hotel. The property, the second after Istanbul under the new “Edition” marque, has a grand lobby with chandeliers and stucco ceilings and a restaurant resembling a Royal Academy summer exhibition, with 160 paintings hung cheek by jowl. In the basement, there’s a soundproofed club that is aiming to become the must-go venue for clubbers and cocktail lovers. It doesn’t look or feel like a Marriott — and Bill still prefers to stay at the group’s Grosvenor House Hotel on Park Lane. He’s excited about the new chain, however, with two more Editions under construction in Miami Beach and New York, another two planned in Bangkok and India and a plan for an estate of 100.

“It’s designed for 24 to 40-year-olds, who are probably half of the travelling public today,” says Marriott.
“They’re very different from my generation. They look for something that’s edgy and for opportunities to connect with each other and that’s why the public area is so very important for us. “They don’t spend a lot of time in their room like we used to and they’re much more into technology than I ever was. “It’s for a different customer and it requires a totally different approach. “It’s a new direction for us but we think that over the long-term it’s going to be very successful.” Marriott is used to new directions. His father and mother famously founded the company in 1927 as a root beer stand in Washington DC, later expanding into restaurants and hotels. Over the years, Marriott says the company has been a “game changer”, becoming the first big hotel chain to have a membership points club with Marriott Rewards and forming America’s first “big box” hotel chain with the downmarket Courtyard brand. Marriott still remembers arguing with his father over the company’s decision to build its flagship Marriott Marquis tower in New York’s Times Square in 1983,
“He didn’t want to do it,” he says, smiling. “I overrode him. People said it was crazy but it’s been the most successful hotel we’ve ever done from a financial standpoint.”

Marriott now has 3,800 hotels worldwide, including about 600 in Europe, of which 86 are in Britain. There are 18 different hotel brands, including Edition and Moxy, and a new “lifestyle brand at a low price” that Marriott wants to roll out to 150 hotels over the next seven to eight years. But he still sees lots of gaps in the portfolio. He wants more hotels in Italy, where he says the group does not have much outside Rome and Milan. He’s also very keen on Africa, where Marriott is developing hotels in Morocco and opening up in Libya and Tunis. Its Rwandan site, only the second major hotel in Kigali, is scheduled to open in the next six months. Still, the global mix isn’t changing very quickly, with the 100 hotels a year opened outside the US and Canada each year counterbalanced by the same number of domestic openings. “We’re going to be more global than we are right now,” insists Marriott. “We’re in 74 countries but we’ll be in 100 in the next three to four years. “We have more than 60 hotels in China and have more than 20 in India and another 20 to 30 under construction in each, so we should hit 100 hotels in China and 40 to 50 in India in the next two to three years. We’re also expanding in Brazil. “It’s a global business now. Last year, more than 1bn people travelled outside their home country. “The biggest opportunity for us is global growth. It’s also been the biggest surprise.“Back in 1980 people used to ask me when we were going to launch in Asia and I would say that we still didn’t have a hotel in San Francisco. I went to China in 1979 and there were only four or five hotels in the whole country. Today there are thousands.” This wider geographical footprint also carries risks, with Marriott admitting that the group’s biggest hotel in Cairo is running at an occupancy rate of just 20pc due to the recent civil unrest. And in Spain AC Hotels, a Marriott chain with 70 hotels, is being hit by the nation’s troubled economy. The international expansion has required a different business model, with most Marriott hotels outside the US operated on a managed basis, compared to only 50pc in the US, where the franchising model remains strong. Marriott is quietly confident about the world economy, however.

“We feel fairly good about worldwide economic growth,” he says. “China seems to have turned the corner, Brazil is struggling a little and the US is doing moderately better, not really great. “But we’re going to do better in Europe this year than we thought we would and we’re encouraged about the direction of the world economy.” Marriott says the group’s revenues per room will be up in Europe this year, despite London being more than 10pc down on last year’s Olympics bonanza. “London is one of the best hotel markets in the world,” he says. “The rest of the UK is doing better than we thought it would. It’s coming out of recession.” The group, quoted on the New York Stock Exchange, has also been through its own seismic change. Bill Marriott stepped down as chief executive in 2011 to be replaced by Arne Sorenson, only the third CEO in 85 years and the first from outside the family. “We needed to have the right person,” explains the chairman. “We had family members who were active in the business but were not quite ready to be CEO. Arne was the logical choice and the family supports him.” As for Marriott, he’s embracing the digital age by posting a weekly blog. And he still finds time to drive his 1967 Ferrari and his other 29 classic cars. How long can he continue as an active chairman? “I have no plans to change,” he replies. “As long as my health is good and my brain still functions, I’ll be here. “I visit over 200 hotels a year. My record is 325.” And with that, he’s off to visit some. “Let’s go and kick some tyres,” he says.

The Quality Inn and Suites, 7500 Vantage Dr., will be closed until at least this afternoon and face increased inspections for four months after recent inspections found serious food-safety violations. The Columbus Board of Health voted on the suspension at its meeting yesterday. Nobody from the Far North Side hotel attended. Violations in recent months included unsanitary utensils and surfaces, lack of food-safety knowledge on the part of the person in charge and foods held at improper temperatures. The board also voted for four months of increased monitoring of the Popeye’s Chicken, 1084 Cleveland Ave.; and Los Mariachis, 3610 S. High St. Employees of both restaurants also must have appropriate food-safety training, the board said.

Located in Croatia's Dubrovnik Riviera, known for its scenic bays, sandy beaches, steep cliffs and forested islands, the village of Kupari was once an idyllic summer getaway for the high-ranking military officers of the Yugoslav People's Army. Today, the tourist complex lay in ruins, shell-scarred from attacks during the Croatian War of Independence in the early 1990s. Water damage and rust have marred Kupari's once-majestic hotels, now overgrown with vegetation. One of the massive hotels, the Grand Hotel, was built in 1920, according to the Zupa Duborvocka Tourist Board. It housed 139 beds and featured an indoor swimming pool, and luxurious rooms with stunning ocean views. Photographer Ben Fredericson captured the images of the ruins of the hotel, now covered in graffiti and crumbling in disrepair, in the slideshow above. The Grand Hotel, and the three other hotels that made up the Kupari Tourist Complex, were severely damaged from attacks and eventually abandoned 20 years ago, but extreme weather have also contributed to its state of eerie disrepair.

"As structures deteriorate, rainfall entering buildings can cause extensive water damage, including significant flooding," according to Weather.com Meteorologist Christopher Dolce. In addition to rain, freeze and thaw cycles also cause the buildings to crack and crumble, and strong winds can peel away at roofing and siding, he explained.Despite the crumbling buildings in the backdrop, tourists still flock to the crescent-shaped pebble-beach of Kupar, Croatia's most visited Adriatic Sea resort. In 2012, Croatia announced plans to offer Kupari for development, according to Bloomberg News.  The resort will be offered for development of hotels, villas and a conference center, partly through concession and partly through property sales, the Tourism Ministry told Bloomberg. Maybe soon, opulent hotels, homes and amenities will rise again in Kupari. For now, ghostly ruins caused by war and weather litter the bay.

Today is the day! I bet you know what I’m talking about, don’t you? The highly anticipated mobile release, right? Yep, it’s here: Starwood Hotels & Resorts has finally released its new app. Oh, you’re talking about iOS 7? Oh, well that’s cool too. Yes, it’s true, iOS 7 has finally been released today. We can now begin to see all the wonderful newfangled iOS things developers will be able to create. With this update comes new graphics, apps, controls, as well as a new developer language. Which really means that apps are going to have to update, and fast, if they haven’t already. But, as I alluded to earlier, Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG), the loyalty program headed by Starwood Hotels & Resorts, has released its latest app in both English and Chinese fresh on the heels of the iOS release. This morning in New York, the company’s senior vice president, Chris Holden, and its VP of global and digital, Clay Cowan, unveiled the new app, giving the press both a chance to see the new app as well as see the new OS in action.

Cowan and Holden reported that the company’s mobile reservations have risen dramatically over the last few years. In addition, the company projects that it will receive more online traffic from mobile devices than personal computers by 2015. It also dubs itself the “most global hotel company,” with properties in over 100 countries. While the company’s revenue decreased earlier this year, its profits exceeded estimates due to a tax benefit. With all of this, the company is hoping to increase its branding and clientele by keeping up with mobile trends. According to Cowan, the new app was tailored around two different types of user use-cases: the person who sits back and leisurely peruses the app to find the perfect hotel by looking at users’ instagrams, reviews, amenities list, etc., and the person who need to book a room now with a “quick burst of energy.” So users can easily browse endless information about potential hotels, or quickly book a reservation if they’re in a hurry.

Holden said that the company had been working on an iOS 6 update, when it received word about the news about iOS 7 a few months back. So the devs decided to scrap the original update and start building the 7 model from scratch. This seems to have worked out nicely because the app’s interface is easy to use and has some cool features. Take, for example, the app’s Foursquare and Instagram integration, allowing users to see what’s trending nearby their hotels and view perfectly filtered photos of beachside resorts.

The two executives explained that this release is trying to transcend your average hotel booking app, and was built from a “tech developer standpoint.” What does this mean? Well, to be honest, not too much — it is still a hotel reservation app. It does use some of 7′s latest features, including a trippy background that utilizes the OS’s parallax 3D background. (All this means really is that if you move the device up and down, the background slightly shifts and morphs in a visually appealing way.) It also uses the new feature AirDrop, which allows iOS users to share files with each other. For Starwood, this lets users share their reservation information, or specifics about certain properties, with others. While there are some standout features like includes in-app booking and unfiltered user reviews (the latter is a smart marketing move on Starwood’s part), this doesn’t mean a new epoch for hotel reservation apps. It just means that Starwood has a good developer team, and hopefully others will follow suit. And for those who don’t have enough money for a Starwood reservation, if you ever want to spend hours hate-browsing by swiping through numerous user-generated photos from five-star resorts, there’s now an app for that.

While hotels and resorts have long leaned on Mother Nature to enhance their guest experiences, few wild assets rival that of prime waterfront real estate -- be it on a sugary sand beach or a dramatic rocky bluff. Fortunately for travelers, there's a lot of choice for those seeking a great coastal getaway. Culled from Travel + Leisure's annual World's Best Awards, the top 10 hotels listed here were rated highly by readers -- and come with ocean breezes, water views and ultra-scenic shores. Asked to evaluate properties for categories including rooms/facilities, location and service, survey-takers made it clear that a coastal location can be one of a hotel's greatest features.

No matter your definition of what makes a great coastal hotel, from the Florida Keys to Oregon, there's one clear characteristic that all of the properties flaunt. This is a genteel lodge with 40 country-style rooms and on-site access to a legendary golf course. A bagpiper roams the grounds every evening. Numbers 2 and 3 have enormous balconies that overlook the 18th hole at Plantation Golf Course.Guests have access to the amenities of the lodge's sister property, The Cloister, including its 65,000-square-foot spa and the Georgian Room restaurant. This historic 1928 Mediterranean-style resort has four pools and is set on a secluded beach.Beach Club suites have kitchens, fireplaces and balconies.Take a 90-minute tour ($100 per person) of the salt marsh onboard the Cloister Belle, a restored antique yacht. You'll see oyster beds and live shrimp.

Off the coast of Florida, the Elizabeth Pointe Lodge has configurations for every type of traveler. Each of the four suites of the nearby Ocean House opens onto a private deck. The Miller Cottage is built for families or groups, with two bedrooms and bathrooms, a living room and a patio. And the 20-room Main House's lawn fans out into beachgrass-tufted sand dunes.Number 16 is a corner room with a rainforest shower for two and ocean views from the king bed. This is a shingled sanctuary overlooking Haystack Rock. A Arizona mother is in custody Monday after police say she allegedly killed her two children. Marilyn Edge, 42, was arrested and booked on two counts of alleged murder after her 13-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter were found dead in a Santa Ana, California, hotel room. Santa Ana police were alerted to the children's location after Edge crashed her car Saturday night in an apparent suicide attempt in nearby Costa Mesa. Santa Ana Police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna told reporters at a news conference that Edge tried to crash into an electrical box and had a propane tank in the car. The car was stopped by metal posts before it could hit the electrical box. When police arrived, they found the woman with a cord wrapped around her neck. Costa Mesa Police Sgt. Tim Starn said she was trying to strangle herself. The paramedics who responded to the crash were able to pull Edge from the car and said she told them about her children. They called Santa Ana police to check the hotel. "She was specific about the crime and she was specific about the location. That's why we got the call," Bertagna said.Police have yet to disclose how the children were killed. Edge is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday.

The US rider Chris Horner missed a random doping test on Monday after the Spanish Anti-Doping Agency (AEPSAD) officials went to a wrong hotel looking for the newly crowned Vuelta a España champion, according to his team. "The testers came to the team hotel, Horner was not there, he was in the hotel where his wife was staying," said a RadioShack press officer. "It's mentioned in the whereabouts form, they got the wrong hotel. Horner had changed his hotel. It was the Spanish agency that came on behalf of Usada [the US Anti-Doping Agency]." An AEPSAD spokesman said the agents had gone to the hotel address provided by the US agency early on Monday. They checked another hotel but Horner was not there either and AEPSAD admitted they did not know his then whereabouts. "We do not want to make any kind of judgment about whether this was a violation of the rules as we do not have all the facts," he said.

RadioShack later issued a statement, accompanied by screenshots of emails sent by the American, to clarify that the Spanish Anti-Doping Agency is at fault. "Chris Horner updated his whereabouts with United States Anti-Doping Agency before the start of the final stage," the statement read. "He gave USADA the name of his hotel for the night, phone number and room number for his one-hour window between 6 to 7am. "This is all according to the rules and Chris Horner received a confirmation email. The anti-doping inspectors from the Spanish Anti-Doping Agency that were asked to do the test by USADA showed up at the wrong hotel in Madrid, where the team was staying, but Horner was obviously not to be found."

RadioShack are frustrated that news of the missed test was made public. "The team believes the communication between the Spanish Anti-Doping Agency and the media is a violation of the privacy of Chris Horner, especially since it comes down to a clear mistake by the tester," the statement added. "The team will seek compensation for this matter with the responsible anti-doping agencies." Horner, who will be 42 next month, became the oldest Grand Tour champion and the first American winner of the Tour of Spain when he sealed victory on Sunday for the biggest win of his 19-year career.

If you’ve shopped for a hotel reservation recently and been unpleasantly surprised by the rates, you’ve had first-hand experience of just how good these times have been for the U.S. lodging industry. In the current environment—since the 2008 financial crisis, steadily rising hotel occupancies have pushed room rates higher—Blackstone Group (BX) is understandably eager to take Hilton Worldwide public and recoup some of the $26 billion it paid in 2007 for the chain at the height of the private-equity buying boom. The hotel chain filed its registration on Thursday for a $1.25 billion initial public offering, which is expected in 2014. “For Blackstone, it doesn’t make sense to keep something this valuable on the books,” Jeffrey Sica, who oversees about $1 billion at Sica Wealth Management, told Bloomberg News. Hilton’s brands include DoubleTree, Embassy Suites, Hampton Inn, and Waldorf Astoria. The company operates more than 4,000 properties in 90 countries.Rival public chains Starwood Hotels and Resorts (HOT) and Hyatt Hotels (H) have this year seen their shares rise about 19 percent and 17 percent, respectively. Marriott International (MAR), the largest U.S. hotel chain, is up about 14 percent. “The timing couldn’t be better,” said Chad Beynon, an analyst with Macquarie Capital.

In the top 25 U.S. markets, hotel occupancy rose to 76.3 percent in July, from 75.2 percent a year earlier, according to Smith Travel Research, and revenue per available room rose 6.2 percent. August data have not been published yet. The demand for rooms has been driven primarily by a rebound in corporate travel since the end of the recession, as flush companies keep their rainmakers on the road and send employees to conventions and other business gatherings. Once occupancies top 70 percent, room rates and profit margins really begin to expand, Beynon said. At Hilton, net income rose 39 percent last year to $352 million, on sales of $9.4 billion, according to the IPO filing. The chain’s occupancy rate rose from 68 percent in 2010 to 72 percent in the first half of this year, while its average room rate gained more than $10 to $136.43 during that period. Those kinds of financial improvements have been seen across the industry as financing became much more restrictive, curbing room growth. The current boom cycle is likely to play out for several more years. “We’re just not seeing the shovels in the ground or the cranes out front or the financing come through,” Beynon said. “That’s why we’re expecting low supply through 2016.”

In 2014, hotel occupancy is expected to increase 1.3 percent to 63.1 percent, with average rates rising nearly 5 percent to $115.73, according to STR. Washington, D.C., ground zero of the federal government’s budget sequestration, is the only market likely to see flat to negative revenue growth. “The outlook for the U.S. industry is very positive for the next 18 months,” STR President Amanda Hite said in a news release accompanying the forecast. That’s one reason Hilton’s Blackstone owners hope investors will also check into its stock and not just its hotels.

TWO IRISH HOTELS have made it into Expedia’s list of top hotels in the world. The Expedia Insiders’ Select list features the top 100 hotels and is completely independent of advertisers and partners. The Lake Hotel in Killarney is ranked in the 50th place while The River Lee Hotel in Cork comes in at 75. Expedia states that of the 205,000 hotels and resorts on Expedia, only 650 hotels are deemed eligible for the list. Hotels deemed eligible were ranked with a numerical score. Only the top hotels with the highest scores were chosen for the Insiders’ Select list.To make the cut, hotels must have a minimum number of reviews (which they state they verify to be authentic) and a price comparison is made between nearby resorts that have a similar star rating and amenities. Expedia stated they also rely on their expert reviewers to rank the top hotels. The Expedia top 100 list comes out in the same week that the website Hotels.com published a survey that claimed that average prices for rooms in Ireland booked on their site had risen in the last six months. The Irish Hotels Federation, however, says that those numbers are wrong and based on too small a sample size.

An ad seeking unpaid interns to bus tables at Vancouver's Fairmont Waterfront Hotel has sparked a debate about whether unpaid internships take advantage of students. The ad was circulated on Twitter and was reportedly posted on the hotel's career section briefly before it was taken down. "Exceptional service and cuisine are hallmarks of The Fairmont Waterfront dining experience," the ad reads. "As a Busperson, you will take pride in the integral role you play in supporting your Food and Beverage Colleagues and 'setting the stage' for a truly memorable meal." 'Even dishwashing, it's education. It's a lower-end job, but from there it stems to many other things.' — VCC culinary arts head John-Carlo Felicella. Twitter users responded, with a flurry of mostly negative tweets. "Dine at the Fairmont, where breakfast for 2 may be $50+ and your busboy an unpaid intern," wrote Twitter user Norm_Farrell. "It simply exploits the vulnerability of youth and new Canadians who are trying to enter the job market," replied Twitter user nowgreenvoter.

Twitter user TynaMcNair wrote: "I cannot think of a reason this or 'unpaid' training should be allowed in BC, unless non-profit."But John-Carlo Felicella, head of Vancouver Community College's culinary arts department, said interns often have no prior restaurant experience and internships provide them with a way to find out if they're cut out for the industry. "Even dishwashing, it's education," he said. "It's a lower-end job, but from there it stems to many other things." Vancouver Community College requires every restaurant to sign a contract pledging that the unpaid interns aren't taking jobs away from paid employees. Unpaid interns are supposed to work five to 10 hours a week and can only observe and assist. B.C. law states interns cannot do actual work without pay. CBC News contacted the Fairmont Waterfront for comment, and a spokesperson replied with an emailed statement: "As a leading hotel in the city we actively support local schools and work in partnership with them to provide opportunity and access to practical workplace experience."

Affordable Hotels In San Diego

Universal Orlando is likely to add thousands more hotel rooms in coming years as Central Florida's No. 2 theme-park resort continues an aggressive expansion, a top executive said Wednesday. "We've done a study that says we could have 10,000 or 15,000 hotel rooms and still have occupancy that makes those rooms profitable," NBCUniversal President and Chief Executive Officer Steve Burke told investment analysts at a conference in Beverly Hills, Calif. "And all of those people staying in those hotel rooms would be more likely to go to our theme parks," Burke added. "So I think, strategically, we need to get those hotel rooms open and build out the resort."Such an expansion would at least quadruple the 2,400 hotel rooms that Universal Orlando currently has, though that figure will jump to about 4,200 early next year with the opening of Universal's Cabana Bay Beach Resort. All of Universal's on-property hotels are owned and operated through joint ventures with Loews Hotels.

A large infusion of hotel rooms at Universal could pose a direct threat to Walt Disney World, which has roughly 26,000 hotel rooms and time-share suites. One of Disney's central business strategies for the past decade has been to lure more visitors into its hotels and encourage them to spend much or all of their vacations on Disney World property.Burke told analysts that NBCUniversal wants to position the Universal theme parks as "a family destination in and of itself, and not an add-on destination for somebody that spends three or four days somewhere else." Universal could also pull business away from surrounding hotels in the International Drive corridor, much as Disney World has pulled guests onto its property from hotels and motels along U.S. Highway 192 in Osceola County. Disney would not discuss Burke's comments. Analysts said Universal has demonstrated during the past three years — since the opening of its $265 million Wizarding World of Harry Potter — that it can attract travelers directly to its property rather than merely peeling off business stimulated by Disney.

"Being a weak No. 2 player in the market has not been very profitable for the resort [Universal] in the past," said Bob Boyd, a leisure-industry analyst with the investment company Pacific Asset Management. "They have shown in recent years that they can meet or beat Disney in attraction quality at fraction of the price; now they need to add the room product to capture a greater share of tourists' time and wallet. To do that, they need the ability to offer many more full-vacation packages." Universal has implemented other strategies designed to steer visitors into spending more time in its theme parks. Just before Wizarding World opened in 2010, Universal introduced a new price scale — modeled after Disney World's — that offers three- and four-day passes with cheaper per-day prices than one-day tickets.

But one of the resort's obvious weaknesses is its hotel inventory. All three of Universal's existing hotels are priced as top-end, "deluxe" hotels, beyond the reach of most theme-park visitors. By contrast, three-quarters of Disney World's hotels are in the low-end "value" or midtier "moderate" categories. Cabana Bay, scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2014, should help. Universal says its fourth hotel will be priced as a cheaper alternative, though it will also include fewer amenities. Half of the rooms will also be "family suites," with room for as many as six people, further expanding Universal's inventory. "Universal Orlando has attractive high-end room product," Boyd said. "What they lack is diversity of room offerings."

Although Universal has far less land than Disney does, it has some vacant and underused parcels near Interstate 4 and its Wet 'n Wild water park. NBCUniversal, now 100 percent owned by cable-television giant Comcast Corp., isn't building just hotel rooms. The company has dramatically accelerated construction of new rides and attractions as well. Universal Orlando alone added a Despicable Me simulator ride, character parade and evening light show last year and a Transformers thrill ride and a Simpsons retail area this year. And it is adding a second Harry Potter-themed land, which will open by next summer.

The investments are paying off: Burke said attendance at Universal Studios Florida, one of the two theme parks at Universal Orlando, has been up about 20 percent "most weeks" since Transformers opened in June.
Burke said NBCUniversal has elevated the capital spending in its theme parks to about $500 million this year — an amount likely to become an annual baseline. The company's goal is to open one new attraction every year both at Universal Orlando and at Universal Studios Hollywood in Southern California, he said. "Our theory is, if we open the right kind of attraction — they have to be well-executed; they have to be things that are easy and clear to market — that we can really grow this business," Burke said.
