Marriott International, Inc. is set to expand its operations in the South American state of Peru with a brand new Courtyard by Marriott Hotel location in Lima, the country’s third largest city. The hotel is set to join other Marriott-operated hospitality spots in the country, namely the JW Marriott Lima and the JW Marriott Cuzco, both of which are owned by local corporation, Inversiones La Rioja, S.A. The new venue will be developed as per an agreement with the local entity.

Set to be located in the affluent neighborhood of Miraflores, the Courtyard by Marriott in Lima will be a 150-key upscale facility that will benefit from proximity to high quality shopping and dining spots, all in the ambiance created by the ocean. The amenity package that the facility will offer includes a business lobby, a casual dining restaurant, substantial meeting space, a fitness facility and a swimming pool. JW Marriot Lima is a 300-key facility while the JW Marriott Cuzco offers guests 153 rooms to choose from. Lima is regarded as one of the strongest entry points Marriott International has for the Latin American hospitality market, according to company representatives.

This is the first facility operating under the Courtyard by Marriott brand in Peru and according to the hospitality giant’s President of the Caribbean & Latin America division, Craig S. Smith; it will mark the company’s aggressive expansion policy in the area. The company responsible for the development of the venue has voiced its opinion through Alfonso Brazzini, president of the board at Inversiones La Rioja: “With the incredible performance of the JW Marriott Lima, we are confident this hotel will do very well in Lima.”

Rancho Bernardo Hotels

I’ve been working on a contract in Rancho Bernardo, part of San Diego, for the last several weeks, and I’ve tried just about every hotel in the area under $200. Here’s a summary:My go-to hotel is the Courtyard by Marriott. It’s one of the pricier hotels, but it’s the one closest to my workplace and the staff is great – they even comp me a Coke or Dove bar once in a while. I haven’t tried the restaurant – the $11 breakfast buffet might be a good deal – but with all the eateries within walking distance (tip – walk around the little duck park in back for easy access to dim sum, Denny’s, Rubios, a nice Italian sub place…) you have plenty of options, including a Von’s supermarket if you just want to use the room fridge and microwave.

The Hilton Garden Inn just up the road is about the same price and level, with somewhat convenient access to some other restaurants in a different strip mall. They have good fresh-baked cookies (I confess I went back for seconds. And thirds) at the front desk and a nice large lobby. The best free breakfast can be found at the Staybridge Suites. Really good. The best value hotel is the Hotel Meridien in Encinitas, just two freeway exits away. Half the price of the other hotels I’m listing here (it’s really a motel), but with nice rooms (great tiling in the bathroom), pretty good internet, and a great TV channel selection. I’m fascinated by the frozen-food vending machine – there’s a vacuum nozzle that suctions the frozen item of your choice (I picked a Hot Pocket) out of a freezer and drops it through the dispenser.

The Rodeway Inn next to the Hooters is closed for renovation. It sports a Norman Bates vibe right now. There are two other hotels near the Hooters (not that I used that as a hotel search criterion) – the Radisson and the Holiday Inn. Both are about the same price and probably the best value that you can get without going to Encinitas or Poway. The Radisson has a pretty good free breakfast (they give you a ticket)The Residence Inn has a great manager’s evening reception – barbeque sandwiches and beer (good beer!) while I was there.

For the Grand Opening reception of the Berkeley Wine Festival Mike Wanless of TateDog Wines decorated his table with a canine statue resembling his former pet. While pouring his wines, he shared stories about TateDog, “a not particularly good, but a ‘great’ dog.”A first-timer at the festival, which is held at The Claremont Hotel Club and Spa, Wanless lives in Oakland, and sources his grapes from Livermore where he also makes his small production wines. The vintner said he was pleased to participate in a major-league festival with big-name producers such as Joseph Phelps, ZD Wines and Michael David Winery.More pragmatically, he was  thrilled that his table was sited right next to Rockridge restaurant Wood Tavern. “TateDog Cabernet Sauvignon pairs well with the restaurant’s lamb meatballs. After folk got their food, they came right over for more wine,” he said.he Berkeley Wine Festival, held at The Claremont, showcases a mix of local, national and international wines, as well as appetizing food from nearby restaurants. The fourth annual festival kicked off with the Grand Opening Reception on March 16. A series of 11 Friday night winemaker dinners follows through this month and May at Meritage, the hotel’s fine dining restaurant. The Berkeley Wine Festival has grown exponentially from 140 guests in 2009 to this year’s 1,300 attendees.  In the early years, while the property was being renovated and the menu at the Meritage was being restyled, the festival was not advertised. This year, however, the hotel broadly publicized its 2013 opening reception, the Meritage winemaker dinners and a new charitable giving component. The Alameda County Community Food Bank received a check for nearly $2,000 from a portion of the reception’s proceeds.

With two windowed rooms fronting the bay, and two inside ballrooms, the hotel provided ample space for 50 wine companies ready to pour 180 wines. Five local cafés, as well as the Claremont’s Meritage and Paragon Restaurant and Bar, presented diverse food options.Delilah Feathers, a recent transplant to San Jose from Boston, was a first-time attendee and relished the ambiance of the Claremont ballroom with a jazz band playing in the background. “Rather than a big wine expo, I like both the cozy and grand rooms here,” she said. “But I wish I hadn’t eaten lunch beforehand,” she added. The nibbles at the opening to the festival were sourced locally. Feathers noshed on bacon and leek mini-quiche from Starter Bakery of Oakland. Ariane Hogan of Berkeley savored the wild mushroom and truffle crostini at the booth of the Elmwood neighborhood’s Summer Kitchen Bake Shop. She segued to the crowded Wood Tavern table with Wanless wine in hand and shared her favorite wine festival maxim, “The best food tables have the longest wait — don’t forget to fill your glass before lining up.”

Berkeley-based Kirala Sushi Bar and the city’s Cheese Board Collective also boasted long queues. But the steadiest flow of traffic was headed to the Meritage booth, strategically located adjacent to guest check-in at the restaurant’s entrance. Late in the afternoon, Shannon Corey of Oakland reminisced about the blend of flavors of a duck confit rilette with vanilla parsnip mousseline, cara-cara orange, pickled huckleberry, endive marmalade, and arugula accompanied by a shot of pea and mint soup served by Meritage’s recently appointed Chef de Cuisine Scott Quinn. With an eye on local sourcing, several East Bay wineries were invited to participate at the festival. The Caravel Wine Group, headquartered in Fremont, is owned by three East Bay friends who sell directly to the public. Coming from non-winemaking backgrounds, and operating without their own winery or vineyards, the vintners label themselves as “outcasts.” Their Outcast label displays a cowboy overlaid onto a colorful photo of the San Francisco Bay. The company offers a unique marketing ploy: anyone who finds the five hidden wine symbols on the Outcast label receives a free bottle of the wine. Guests were too busy sampling the Outcast Merlot and Caravel Zinfandel to discover the disguised treasure.

After tasting $40 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Karen Davé of Fremont was impressed with Wente Vineyards’ Double Decker red blend selling for $10.99. Wente regional sales director Marc Gutierrez said Double Decker garnered the most attention at festivals for its price and for its provenance from the oldest, family-owned, continuously operating winery in the U.S.Rosenblum Cellars, located in Alameda but no longer locally owned, poured Rosenblum Kontrabecki Livermore Zinfandel. Those who have driven by the Airway Blvd. exit of Highway 580 may have seen the hillside Kontracbecki vineyard. To belie the serious nature of a wine festival, guests lined up at Belgian and specialty beer spot The Trappist Provisions’ booth expecting food from their café menu only to find beer poured into their glass. After tasting Trappist Saison, Delilah Feathers said she liked it but added, “I don’t like mixing beer with wine.”There were many more wines for Feathers to sample. From Napa Valley’s Frank Family Vineyards to J. Lohr in Paso Robles, venerable wineries mingled among newcomers, including Sonoma’s Capture and new brands such as Green Lip New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc from Cameron Hughes Wine. Charles Smith Wines from Walla Walla, Washington poured Kung Fu Riesling from the Ancient Lakes appellation and Secco brand sparkling wine from Italy.

Luxury Hotels In San Deigo

I was flipping through some images from a California trip I took a few years ago.  The pictures of San Diego reminded me of what a wonderful urban city San Diego is. You might have the impression that San Diego is a sprawling mess in the California tradition of auto-centric living.  You would be partially right. It is that for sure.  But it is also a beautiful and walkable urban place in many areas.  The first time I visited San Diego I was a teen without a car.  I traveled all over town quite easily on their great bus system.  That was even before they built an extensive light rail system with beautiful red train cars running all the way to the Mexico border.  The city’s hilly terrain tends to break it up into various compact regions with densely built clusters of buildings and busy, often walkable,  commercial streets.  Sprawly areas tend to be up in the hills and more remote valleys. Although the city is not the perfect model of urbanism it has done enough right to make any urbanist smile. The images included here were taken during a visit about three years ago.  They are of a beachside neighborhood. (I am forgetting which one.)  This part of the city is composed of a very dense collection of small houses and cottages packed tightly along narrow footpaths with alleys in back that run perpendicular to the beach.  On the ocean side of these houses is a wide sidewalk and then the sand beach beyond a low concrete wall.  On the city side of the houses is a local service road.  The entire environment is extremely pleasant.  It all has a bit of a casual down market vibe but I am sure is very expensive by Buffalo standards. The beach path is packed with people walking and skating and shopping. Much of the path is lined with houses and budget style hotels facing the water. At occasional breaks in the wall of buildings a road will dead end into the beach.  Commercial nodes tend to cluster around these “entry points” at the dead end roads.   This commercial activity is often housed in the colorful little wooden shacks and tent structures.

This brings me to the point of this post.  When I see these shacks I think of Canalside and what could be.  Since the demise of the Bass Pro folly, the mantra for Canalside development has been “Lighter, Quicker, Cheaper”.  The idea behind this phrase is to emphasize Canalside as a place to be and to give people a reason to be there and do things quickly and on a small budget. To an extent this approach has had success.  This once desolate part of the city is now a popular place to be with just a few simple moves.  Progress has been promising and the area is becoming a destination of sorts.  But have they done enough?  People can be found strolling, picnicking and participating in special events every day of the week, and concerts attract thousands.  This is all good but, I think the powers that be may have already forgotten the Lighter Quicker Cheaper part of the equation. “Huh?”, you say.  ”Hundreds of mIllions of dollars in construction is right now being concentrated in this small section of the city.”  ”How much faster can they go?” you say. Yes major construction surrounds the site, and historic canals are being built.  All of this is great and will serve to make this a major focal point of the city in a few years.  But, I think they could take the concept of Lighter Quicker Cheaper much further and in so doing so strengthen this area into a true regional destination.

The historic roads of Canalside were laid out and rebuilt going on a few years now.  The intent is (I think) to fill these recreated historic blocks with densely built new structures housing, commercial enterprises and residential units.  So far the only thing built in the area is one wooden food shack. What is the big delay in filling these historic streets with buildings?  Is that never going to happen?   Why not start filling these blocks with colorful little shacks like these in San Diego.  These shacks are attractions in themselves. They can serve as incubators for new businesses which could eventually fill new permanent buildings on the site. The $600,000 the city is spending on an addition to an existing building just down the river at Erie Basin could have funded 50 or more of these colorful San Diego shacks. Is Canalside gradually slipping back into silver bullet land?  These small historic blocks of Canalside have tremendous potential to be great city places and very popular streets on which to live and shop. Why not set up 30 small colorful shacks and give the space rent free to some start up businesses. It is a no brainer.  So what if 90% fail each year?  It does not matter.  You now have three new businesses a year that start to fill in the space and attract people.   I admit to knowing nothing about the plans for these CanalsIde blocks but I think the temporary grass has had its time in the sun.

Nearly perfect temperatures year round, the Pacific Ocean as a backdrop, and a relaxed Southern California vibe makes it hard to argue with San Diego as a good choice for a destination wedding. Of course every bride has her own style, so here are five of our favorite San Diego area hotels that will let you express yours

La Dolce Vita
You may be in San Diego, but you’ll swear you’re in Italy at the five-diamond Grand Del Mar. It looks like a large Italian villa, with the formal manicured gardens and grounds you’d expect of an estate home. Tucked into the Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve, it offers a dramatic setting for an outdoor ceremony on the 8,000 sq. ft. Aria Lawn and its open-air pavilion. Or if you are more tradition minded, there are the stained glass windows, beamed ceilings, and hand-crafted-in-Italy wooden pews in the Elizabeth Capella, the only private chapel in a San Diego hotel. Reception options seem endless, from intimate gatherings in the wine room or Manchester Suite, to large, lavish affairs in the 10,000 sq. ft Elizabeth Ballroom. Prepare for the ceremony with some primping and pampering in the Renaissance inspired spa, just voted among the top five spas in the country by Travel & Leisure.

Picture Perfect
It was created as a movie set fifty years ago, and it’s been the site of many A-list weddings through the years, but today the Paradise Point Resort & Spa lets you star in your own Hollywood fairytale when you exchange vows on its 44-acre, private island. The lush landscape will make you feel you’re in Hawaii or Bali, depending on whether you choose to have your ceremony on the intimate Island Point Lawn overlooking the water, or at Pine Hill Lawn ensconced in the tropical jungle landscape. Weddings can also take place on the Sunset or Paradise Terraces, which both back to the Bay.

Beach Chic
The Travel Channel called it the best place in the U.S. to get married, and that’s hard to argue with. The historic Hotel Del Coronado sits on 28 acres along the beach named the best in the U.S. in 2012. While a beach wedding or reception on Coronado Beach is the obvious choice, the Del also has many other special places to begin your life together, including the Windsor Lawn, which overlooks the Pacific, or the Vista Walk with the resort’s iconic turret in the background. One of the best reception venues is the Crown Room, which features chandeliers designed by Wizard of Oz author, Frank Baum, and has traditionally been the favorite spot for celebrity and presidential events.

“I do’s” for the active set
La Costa Resort & Spa was originally created as a playground for athletes and celebrities, but today it’s an ideal location for active couples to tie the knot. The resort is Southern California’s top golf destination and golfers will love walking down the aisle at the new Valley Promenade, overlooking the greenery of the world-class golf course, or the Orchid Terrace featuring freshly cut fairways and rolling hill vistas. The 400-acre property also features a Wedding Courtyard and many lush, garden nooks to exchange your vows. Brides will enjoy some pre-wedding relaxation at the spa, which was the first U.S. resort spa, and was rated the number one wellness spa by Spa Magazine. Couples can have a romantic experience in the VIP couples suite, where you’ll be treated to side-by-side massages with champagne and strawberries to follow. To calm pre-wedding jitters, the Chopra Center for Wellbeing is the perfect place to take a yoga or meditation class.

Runaway Bride
Don’t want all the fuss of a traditional wedding? Then the boutique West Inn & Suites elopement package is for you. Elevate your elopement by working with their Romance Maestro to plan an intimate wedding for just the two of you, or parties up to eight guests. Couples can get married in the traditional library done in rich woods and featuring a fireplace, on the beach, or in the hotel’s own park. Executive Chef Eugenio Martignago will use the produce grown on West’s farm to craft a memorable reception meal.

When we learned that people would be flying into our fair city from all over the country to Runaway (you know about it, right? A one day all inclusive pop up wedding chapel package? Learn more here.) with us, it became clear that we needed to compile a little (or extensive!) travel guide for everyone. We asked our very own Hostess Haven to extend her hospitality beyond the party and out over San Diego, and boy, she doesn’t disappoint. Even if you are not tying the knot with the Runaway Pop Up Wedding this May in San Diego (shame), this is a handy dandy guide on where to eat and what to do in these parts.

A newly redesigned boutique hotel, swim club & bungalows located on north park’s el cajon boulevard. they’ve been around since 1946 and are a locals favorite for a sunny day swim at the swim club. the up and coming el cajon boulevard is a funky mix between creative small businesses, pawn shops and historical bar icons. stumble out of bed and start your day at coffee and tea collective right down the street before you explore the rest of north park. you might leave for a hike or museum, but you’ll be back in north park to eat, drink and sleep. close by. red fox room – iconic piano bar down the street.

The Pearl. for the beach and romantic runaways a mid-century modern boutique hotel. there’s always something happening on their social calendar, but the most notable is their wednesday night dive-in theatre, which projects movies overlooking their oyster shaped swimming pool. it’s centrally located to downtown, north park, la jolla, or coronado and a definite romantic getaway to retreat back to after exploring the rest of ocean beach or other san diego must sees. close by. liberty station (grocery stores, Con Pane bakery, Stone World Bistro & Point Loma Seafood

Tower 23. for the [pacific & ocean] beach runaways located in pacific beach, one of san diego’s most known beach communities. there are locals, foreigners, travelers and straight up crazy college students roaming these active streets. the ocean view is beautiful and surfing is clearly close, but don’t expect a quiet getaway around town; someone will most likely snag you for a drink as you’re walking back to your hotel, however it’s close enough to the quieter, hippier ocean beach if you’d rather take a quick ride over there to spend your days. ocean beach has sunset cliffs and pacific beach has some great northern hidden beach gems that border la jolla like tourmaline or calumet park or just keep going into la jolla, that’s your best bet if you want a plethora of stunning choices.

la Valencia . for the ‘jewel of san diego’ ‘beach’ runaways truly, it’s a jewel. la jolla has so much to offer which starts and stops pretty much at its coastline and is gorgeous anytime of the year. la Valencia has local charm and much history since 1926. there’s shopping, museums and great restaurants within walking distance as well as championship golfing in case there’s a bachelor day involved? in la jolla you’ll find bird rock, windansea, the shores and the cove to name a few. any beach/ surf lover would easily get lost in these beaches and waves. it quiets down by night so take a cab and head south for more celebratory shenanigans.

air bnb. for the beer loving, outdoorsy, hipster and foodie runaways a perfect option for a couple who wants a more private, unique runaway in exactly the right space for the right budget. it’s a great way to find a perfect little cottage, loft, or house for rent with your own specifications and then venture out as you please to explore the rest of san diego.

do: casbah historic indie music venue where young musicians aspire to play. has hosted bands like nirvana and smashing pumpkins, making it an important driver of the local music scene. classic rustic french food with an amazing escargot risotto if that’s your thing. if it’s not, just indulge in some decent priced wine, meat and cheese and enjoy the rustic décor and cozy dining room. thin pizza crust pizza & unique beers poured in appropriate glassware, how can you go wrong? will ferrel does a fundraiser at blah every year that sells out; I mean who doesn’t wanna follow will?! open for lunch and an awesome deal for a margherita & suzie’s farm greens for $10. vegan options and a fun, casual environment to just hang. grab a six pack and get ready for a fun 2 hours. the earlybird get the worm here as the popular spot can sometimes leave you waiting a bit longer to play but hey, more time for the beer drinking. a legit english gastrobup that serves bangers & mash and shepherd’s pie with a solid euro wine list, a quaint bar and a solid meat/ cheese plate. you’ll catch the owners (jayne, duh. and john) browsing around the dining room and possibly their tottering toddler. the environment is cozy and inviting, you’ll be happy you took your time to enjoy.Stop at olive tree marketplace and grab a few snacks and a bottle of wine to take to the cliffs for the most gorgeous sunset. it’s one of those beautiful scenes that you take for granted when you live close, but that pleasantly surprises you each and every time. could be chilly on the water so dress warm to be cozy.

The Courtyard by Marriott San Diego Downtown hotel, located in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter, recently completed a $5.8 million renovation of all public spaces, meeting rooms and guest rooms.  As part of this comprehensive revitalization, the hotel is unveiling THE LOBBY, a vibrant and refreshing new space for dining, working and relaxing.  The hotel is owned by affiliates of Wheelock Street Capital, LLC, and managed by Sage Hospitality.

Located in downtown San Diego, the hotel is within walking distance of the central business district and many of the city’s premier leisure attractions.  Housed in the historic San Diego Trust and Savings Bank building, this boutique hotel is an iconic San Diego landmark.  The changes to the lobby and public spaces incorporate unique, locally relevant design components which respect the heritage of the building while remaining consistent with Courtyard by Marriott’s brand wide design standards. These changes, which include a new business center, media pods, a GoBoard and an expanded “The Market”, meet modern travelers’ needs while creating a relaxing urban ambience.

The new theme of the boutique Courtyard hotel is “What You Want, Where You Want”. “We call our team ‘cultural instigators’,” said Jody Blackinton , General Manager of the Courtyard San Diego Downtown.  “They are ready and excited to offer guests an authentic San Diego experience while responding promptly to guest needs. This revitalization has underscored the hotel’s local energy and allowed us to further elevate the guest experience.  We’re excited to see more San Diego locals in THE LOBBY alongside our hotel guests. It’s the perfect place for a beer before a Padres game or a delicious dinner date.”
THE LOBBY adds a new flair to the hotel restaurant, taking color hints from the historic hand-painted ceiling and the California sunset.  Separated from the lobby by decorative wood screens, the restaurant has a space of its own while seamlessly connecting to the rest of the hotels public space.  THE LOBBY serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and the redesigned bar features local draft and bottled beers. Dishes offer classic American flavors with a dash of southern California flair.  Coffee service has also been upgraded to a Starbucks Espresso Bar.

Guest rooms have a vibrant color scheme incorporated throughout the new bedding, furniture, carpeting and wall vinyl. Green upgrades include environmentally friendly lights and air conditioning.  Executive king rooms feature a wet bar and sofa bed, while every room now includes refrigerators, microwaves and safes.

Meeting space features new wall vinyl, carpeting, furniture and technology, and also includes the hotel’s new art program.  Following an initiative driven by the Sage Hospitality, more than 300 pieces of local San Diego artwork are featured throughout the hotel.  These include two special commissions—an eight foot by eight foot oil painting of a pool scene by emerging San Diego artist Sarah Stieber , and a contemporary, colorful portrait of San Diego Trust and Savings Bank founder J.W. Sefton, Sr. by Los Angeles artist Leia Steingart .

Rancho Bernardo Hotels|"Is Priceline Lowering Its Standards For 3-Star Hotels?"

I've been a devoted user of Priceline's "Name Your Own Price" bidding tool for years. In the past year, I've written columns here on how to game their bidding system, how to overcome their new bidding hurdles, and another piece about trying to decode their star system. I still love the bidding concept but after several negative experiences of late, I have a few words of cautionary advice on how to bid for hotel rooms.
Rancho Bernardo Hotels
Hotels in Virginia Beach

Two years ago, Hotel Deals Revealed did an analysis comparing Hotwire to Priceline on how generous they are in assigning star levels to hotels and concluded that Priceline was more cautious in assigning stars (i.e., they weren't overrating hotels). But based on several recent experiences bidding on three-star hotels in Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio and London, I think Priceline has lowered its standards for how they classify three-star quality hotels.
While bidding on three-star hotels in the U.S. in the last three months, I've gotten Holiday Inn hotels on four consecutive occasions. Each hotel was adequate, sort of, but none was as clean or nice as what I've been accustomed to getting – Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, Sheraton, etc. – for three-star bids on Priceline over the years.

Charlottesville, Virginia, is a good example of how Priceline's ratings have changed over the years. I've gone to Charlottesville several times over the years and have used Priceline on multiple occasions. There are a number of good three-star hotels in town – Hampton Inn, Doubletree, two Courtyards, a Residence Inn and others. But Priceline now considers two Holiday Inn locations in town as three-star properties as well.

I've stayed in both and they simply aren't as clean or nice as the hotels mentioned above. The furniture at the University location, for example, is dated and ill fitting – the office chairs in the room don't level up with the desk, for example, and on a recent stay there were a host of dead bugs in the sliding glass door, which also had a broken handle.

But as mediocre as the Holiday Inn Charlottesville University is, it's the Taj Mahal compared to the Avni Kensington, a supposedly three-star property I got from a recent bid on Priceline in London. (Priceline refers to this hotel by its old name, the Kensington Edwardian.) My first impression was of their bathroom in the common area. There were no hand towels next to the sinks – just rolls of toilet paper to dry your hands.

My room had three droopy old single beds plus a broken television and non-functioning Wi-Fi. (The Wi-Fi was later fixed; the TV was not.) Trip Advisor categorizes the hotel as a two-star property, which is about right. I made a complaint about the property to Priceline but they stated that the hotel was "unwilling" to issue a refund so I was out of luck. A Priceline spokesperson told me several weeks ago that the company uses a number of criteria in categorizing hotels, including some factors that travelers might not care much about – like if the place has a full-service restaurant, a pool and others.

But what I found most interesting about the experience is the fact that I was unable to review my hotel experience in London on the Priceline site. I asked the customer service rep how I could leave a review of this hotel on the site because they use the customer reviews as a basis for how they categorize the hotels, but she said I had to wait to see if I received an email inviting me to take the survey. I looked through my inbox and noted that I had received survey requests for all of my previous hotel stays (none of which had I issued complaints over) but I didn't get one from this stay in London.

Priceline gives bidders guarantees that they'll receive a hotel with positive feedback (it varies based upon the star level you are bidding on); so I can't help but think that they flag customers who complain about a property not to receive the survey email.

What can you take away from my bidding experiences? The most import thing is to do your homework before you bid. Use Priceline's normal search function and look at what they are offering at each star level. Then check the reviews of those hotels online and assume you'll get the place that has the lowest reviews. If you can't live with that, you need to bump up the star level you're bidding on.

For example, if you are bidding in the north suburban area of Chicago, and you see that Priceline has a hotel they consider a three-star property but that it has horrible reviews, assume that if you bid three stars, you will get that hotel. If you can't live with that, you need to bid 3.5, or find another way to book your room.

July 8, 2013 Update: A spokesperson for Priceline tells me that the company sent me a survey email on 6/22 inviting me to review the hotel I stayed at in London. I have double checked both of my email addresses and I never received it. Either way, there should be a way for customers to review the hotel they stay in, whether one gets their email inviting them to do so or not. And, after bidding on yet another 3 star hotel in Portsmouth, NH this week, and, once again, getting another Holiday Inn with so-so reviews, I stand by what is written above. 3 stars with Priceline used to mean Hyatt, Hilton, Marriott, Sheraton and so on. These days, it seems to be Holiday Inn and other brands in that tier.

San Diego Vacation Hotels | "Dallas hotel dining takes a summer vacation"

As summer stretches ahead, it’s hard not to dream of being in some glorious hotel somewhere for a luxury vacation. Whether or not that’s in the stars for any of us is a matter of luck (or for the lucky ones, choice, perhaps). But here in Dallas, a number of hotel dining rooms seem to be on their own kind of vacation hotels, or forced hiatus, or not exactly pushing their creative agenda forward full speed ahead. Call it the summer hotel dining room dawdle.
San Diego Vacation Hotels
Vacation Hotels
Two hotels are missing executive chefs. Tim Bevins left Rick’s Chophouse, the restaurant at the Grand Hotel in McKinney, more than a month ago; owner Rick Wells still has not announced a replacement. Bevins took over the kitchen at The Front Room: A Park Cities Diner — the restaurant at the Lumen hotel — shortly thereafter, but he doesn’t seem to be in any great hurry to introduce his own menu. “I’m just getting the kitchen clean, getting everything set up, working slowlly, doing a fish special here, figuring out the staff,” he told me in a phone interview two weeks ago. “It’ll be the end of summer before we figure out what what we’re doing.” You’d almost think he was picking up the pieces of a 100-year-old institution that needed a complete redo, not a shiny, chic boutique hotel that was just revamped. The Front Room is not yet ten months old. That’s summer for ya.

Meanwhile, the Pyramid Restaurant has been without an executive chef since Andre Natera left last October; nor has the Fairmont Dallas hotel’s management replaced pastry chef Maggie Huff, who decamped to FT33 in April. The hotel is undergoing major renovations, with plans to have them completed at the end of lazy, languid August.

The Stoneleigh, another important Dallas hotel, changed hands last summer, when it became the Luxe Stoneleigh hotel. The hotel’s dining room, formerly known as Bolla, slowly morphed into T/X — featuring Texas cuisine hotel-style, with few decor changes, but a new chef, Marcelo Vasquez. When I visited in late December, my table was the only one occupied. In January it changed hands again, and now it is Le Meridien Dallas, the Stoneleigh. The restaurant is still T/X. Will Starwood International, the Stoneleigh’s new owner, make any move to put in a destination restaurant? They don’t seem to be in any hurry. (I tried to get updates from both the Stoneleigh and the Pyramid, but publicists were off today. Summer vacay, doncha know?)

And speaking of not in any hurry, there’s the grandest dame of all Dallas hotels: The Adolphus. The downtown landmark, which celebrated its 100th birthday last year, was sold in late December to an investment company, RockBridge Capital LLC. But as Steve Brown reported shortly after the sale, though a makeover has been considered “past due” for the hotel, RockBridge was not in any hurry to shake things up; RockBridge managing director John Rosen told Brown we shouldn’t look for any physical changes for “at least a year.” The magnificent French Room is a Dallas treasure, and I’ve been clamoring for a long time for something more gastronomicallly engaging than what’s been offered there for the last few years. Who knows whether that’s in the stars, or just fantasy. If big changes were to come to pass, I’d bet a bundle that it won’t be anytime this summer.

There is one hotel that’s not taking it easy this summer in terms of changes: the Joule. Weekend Coffee recently opened at the downtown hotel, and there are plans to open CBD Provisions on August 13. Consilient Restaurants, whose Hibiscus just earned four stars in a review, is in charge. So that’s exciting. Meanwhile, it remains to be seen what kind of changes will be happening at Charlie Palmer at the Joule. Last year Charlie Palmer announced that the restaurant would become a foam-free steakhouse, Charlie Palmer Steak, but obviously that never came to pass. Stay tuned on that one — and all the others.

San Diego golf courses are the dream destinations for most golfers all over the world. This attraction is brought about by the beautiful weather all year round in San Diego. Different fields have varying layouts. When golfing here each hole is an adventure to the golfer and an experience never to be forgotten.
Hotel Near San Diego Golf Course
San Diego Golf Course

The fields here are in plenty. This makes the accessibility of these facilities very easy. San Diego boast of over ninety golfing centers spread all over. Golfers therefore access these fields with ease. Different golfing centers are found in various areas. Since this place is the sixth largest city in the United States this explains why it is so much endowed with so many beautiful golfing facilities.

As a sport that is associated with wealth, golfing is not very popular with many households. Most people spend within a certain limit. This therefore limits the amount one can spend on recreation and leisure. The management of these fields has become well aware of this and they have put in place very pocket friendly packages for golfers from all over the world. This has been done in order to open doors to many more aspiring golfers who have a passion for the game but cannot afford the rates charged.

As tedious and exhausting as it may be, golfing alone cannot be the sole activity in most courses. This has led to the development of other institutions in the golfing area. These are places set aside for people to dine or workout and in other cases just relax after a long day of playing some good game. These areas are not only meant to earn more revenue but also to satisfy the needs of all players and their family or friends.

There is also a wide range of fields for every type of golfer. These exclusive facilities enable golfers have different impressions of the game at different sites and layouts. This variety enables golfers to experience challenges at different levels of the courses. These challenges encountered in different golfing units enable players to develop skills that help them improve their game. Many golfers therefore prefer to explore new challenges to help them perfect their skills.

The people who carry the golf clubs for players or drive them in the carts are a highly endorsed by the players. This is because they are probably the most influential when playing. They not only provide the moral support needed by the players but also the technical know-how that is required to win a game. This therefore leaves the golfing facility managers with no option but to hire the best.

In a normal golfing facility, it seems difficult to get a personal trainer. Courses here have made the impossible possible by acquiring the services of the best known trainers to train their members. It is probably one of the best offers one can get on any field anywhere.

No matter where you come from training or playing in San Diego golf courses is truly an adventure to look forward to. This is true since everything here is exceptional. As a visitor or resident of San Diego everyone is obliged to visit one of their courses and experience true sporting.

Not everyone likes a beach holiday, if you prefer your relaxation time with a side of the supernatural then shiver away at these spine-chilling spots instead, each come with their own selection of spooky stories…

Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, Los Angeles
Affortable Hotels In San Diego
Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel
If you’re a fan of old Hollywood, this is probably the place for you. If you’re a fan of ghost Hollywood, this is definitely the place for you! The hotel’s range of great bars, illustrious clientele, and location in the swanky heart of LA are already reason enough to visit, but beneath all that glitz is supposedly the ghost of Marilyn Monroe. Yes, the Marilyn Monroe. Guests and staff alike have reportedly caught glimpses of a ghostly blonde woman in Marilyn’s former suite. It’s probably the most glamorous haunting ever!

Dalhousie Castle Hotel & Spa, Edinburgh

Dalhousie Castle Hotel
Avid Harry Potter fans will no doubt recognise the moniker of the most famous ghost of this 13th-century fortress-turned-hotel – Lady Catherine, or the Grey Lady, who supposedly died of a broken heart and has made spectral visits ever since. If you’re keen to see her, why not dine in the dungeon restaurant?

Jamaica Inn, Cornwall

Jamaica Inn
The setting of the Daphne du Maurier novel of the same name, this old inn is a hotbed of creepy occurrences. An already fascinating history as a popular smugglers’ hiding place has been added to over the years by stories of mysterious noises (footsteps, voices, horses, carriages) and strange visitors (who disappear through the walls).

Hotel del Coronado, San Diego
Hotels In San Diego
Hotel del Coronado
The mystery of Kate Morgan fuels the ghostly activity here – in 1892, she checked into the hotel to meet her estranged husband. The meeting never took place, but six days later, Morgan’s body was found on the hotel steps leading down to the beach. Room 302, the room she stayed in, has never been the same…

Langham Hotel, London

The most haunted hotel in London, the ethereal visitors spotted by Langham guests include a man in Victorian garb, a former German prince, and Napoleon III. Perfect for those who like their spooky encounters with a political twist.

Ballygally Castle Hotel, Northern Ireland

The ghost of Lady Shaw is believed to have been wandering the castle ever since falling to her death from her bedroom window, where her husband locked her away after the birth of their son. So beware of bringing children here…

Grand Hyatt Hotel, Taipei

This luxurious spot in the centre of Taipei looks like the last place you’d ever encounter anything creepy. But the sacred scrolls in the lobby hint otherwise – built over a wartime political prison, the hotel has entertained ghostly goings-on ever since it opened.

Hotel Chelsea, New York

Another great spot for spotting famous visitors – particularly of the otherworldly sort! The Chelsea’s ghostly guests include poet Dylan Thomas, novelist Thomas Wolfe, and Sex Pistols member Sid Vicious. Drop in if you feel like some highbrow haunting!

Hotel Burchianti, Florence

Despite being frequented by artists, musicians, and politicians in the early half of the 20th century, the Hotel Burchianti features a more mundane array of spooks – popular sightings include a woman knitting in a chair, a maid doing her cleaning rounds, and children skipping down the halls.

Decebal Hotel, Bacau

Treasure Island meets The Woman in Black: visitors to the Baile Herculane spa in Romania’s Decebal Hotel have reported sightings of a woman in a long white gown, who supposedly guards an ancient treasure hidden somewhere in the area.
